Describing a woman as a paper doll is normally not a positive thing, however, this wearable tech dress makes paper and tech a woman’s best friend. That’s right, this amazing dress, Ester, is made of paper—1,000 hand-cut paper petals to be exact. The best part is the classy use of NeoPixels with a Lilypad Arduino, allowing the dress to go from demure white edged glow to full on Cyndi Lauper rainbow bright. The dress was created by Flavia Rose and Ash King and was a recent finalist in the World of Wearable Arts Show 2016.
With its belle corset style lace-up back and cage style skirt it looks like Swan Lake prima ballerina meets 1940’s pin-up girl. I found the sculpted cane base for the skirt to be especially interesting; it is almost like the construction of a kite and equally lightweight. Flavia has a love of handcrafting and you should check out how she uses this same cane technique effectively making Leaf Armour.
Normally when you think of fashion competitions you imagine expensive silk and 3D printed materials, so this work in cane and paper is a reminder that simple and natural materials can lead to unexpected beauty.
