Looking for a mind at work making an Elizabeth Schuyler dressed based on the character’s ensemble in Hamilton? Then you’re looking for Bel. She made Eliza’s blue gown for a friend of hers and patterned it from scratch. It took seven yards of blue taffeta fabric to make the dress. She says:
To begin, I created a bum roll for the skirt to be draped on when my client would try things on. This was simply a tube of fabric sewn and attached to ribbons to tie around her waist, stuffed with polyfill to have the appropriate silhouette.
For the skirt, it was a simple circle skirt. I took the length that my client wanted her skirt to be, and her waist measurement, and drew out a half circle on the fabric, folded in half. I cut out one side equal to these measurements, and the other side two inches longer, to accommodate the bum roll.
This was repeated for the underskirt as well, which was cut from a king size bed sheet, to save money.
