Making a Wooden Digital Clock: DIY 16×9 Charlieplexed LED grid wooden bedside clock

Thanks for sending this in Andrew Jones! Via Youtube

Hi, I really enjoyed using the 16×9 charlieplexed LED grid
and IS31FL3731 LED i2c driver in my latest woodworking project video. I made
a simple wood and LED clock using a DS3231 RTC and arduino nano and the
above mentioned LED grid and breakout board. I enjoyed combining traditional
woodworking with electronics something I’ll explore more.

Thought it my be of interest for the blog.

In this video I make a wooden LED digital clock using hand tools and a small drill press. The clock runs on an Arduino and uses an 16×9 LED panel for display and a real time clock to keep time.

This is a fairly simple physical electronics build. You only need to solder some wires together and solder the led breakout board to the LED grid, adafruit has good instructions for that: http://ift.tt/2qTKcQJ. Power is provided via the usb cable. I used was a cheap 40W big box store soldering iron and it worked fine. All details for the circuit diagram and Arduino sketches including the animations are in the links below. Wood used is reclaimed Aussie hardwood.
