Gourdan: the Eye Following Jack-O-Lantern #piday #raspberrypi @Raspberry_Pi

Braden Sunwold of Bare Naked Embedded made this awesome Jack-O-Lantern prop. A creepy but cool addition to any Halloween scene, the prop includes our Adafruit Animated Eyes Bonnet for Raspberry Pi

When my brother in law was a kid, he loved decorating the yard for Halloween. Since recently buying their first home, he wants to one day turn it into a Halloween attraction for people all over the city. When I heard this, the maker in me couldn’t resist getting involved. After all, Halloween is prime time for people like us, providing an excuse to spend money on new toys and tools. After scrolling for inspiration on Adafruit, I came across these LCD eyes and knew I wanted make some sort of eye following Halloween prop. And thus, Gourdan was born.

A DIY Raspberry Pi Smart Phone @Raspberry_Pi #PiDay #RaspberryPi

The answer is yes, you can make a functional DIY smart phone powered by a Raspberry Pi. Here’s more from Hackaday:

[asherdundas], the phone’s creator, actually found a prior build based around the Raspberry Pi before starting this one. The problem was that it was built nearly a decade ago, and hadn’t been updated since. This build brings some modernization to the antiquated Pi phone, and starts with a 3D printed case. It also houses a touchscreen and a GSM antenna to connect to the cell network. With some other odds and ends, like a speaker and microphone, plus a battery and the software to tie it all together, a modern functional Raspberry Pi phone was created, with some extra details available on the project page.

The phone has the expected features — including calling, texting, and even a camera. A small WiFi USB dongle allows it to connect to the Internet too, allowing it to do all of the internet browsing a modern smartphone might want to do. The only thing that it might be pretty difficult to do is install Android apps, and although there are ways to get Android apps working in Linux, it’s not always strictly necessary to have this functionality.

See project!

Raspberry Pi Store Pop Up Today and Tomorrow in London #piday #raspberrypi @Raspberry_Pi

At the beginning of this month the folks at Raspberry Pi announced the dates of the last store pop up of the year, which happens to be today and tomorrow. You’ll find the shop inside Sook at 58 Oxford Street, London. Hope the humans who can make it have a ton of fun!

As well as an exquisite selection of T-shirts, stickers, and some of the best books from the Raspberry Pi Press store, we will have some brand new official merchandise on sale for the first time. Six new items, to be exact. So if you’d like to be one of the first people ever to own one of our brand new mugs, water bottles, pin badges, pens, notebooks, or travel mugs, come and see us in London.

Raspberry Pi 4 (2GB, 4GB, and 8GB) will be in stock at the pop-up. Please be aware that we’re limiting Raspberry Pi 4 to one of these computers per person.

Face-Following Carousel @Raspberry_Pi #PiDay #RaspberryPi

Super handy project from Pete Warden up on Hackster.io. I totally relate to the story behind the project as well — this could be so great for things like watching recipe videos while moving around in the kitchen. The tutorial also points to our Adafruit Learn System Guide Getting Started with Raspberry Pi Pico and CircuitPython by Kattni – thanks for the shout out!

When I’m cooking or cleaning I’ll often watch shows on my tablet, but I’ll be moving around the kitchen and my hands are often full or dirty so I can’t keep the display in view easily. I have a similar problem at my desk, where I have a fan that I’d like to keep pointing at my face as I type. With those situations in mind, I decided to create a stand that you can place an object on, and it will always rotate to face you. This project guide shows you how you can build one too, for around $50, with no soldering!

leaf separator for 40mm drain #3DThursday #3DPrinting

MassassiOrder shares:

Needed a leaf separator for my ACD Greenhouse drain. There are two gutters on each side with a 40mm drain to my water storage. But all the leafs will fall trough it. So I made this separator that fits in the drain/gutter.
You still need to clean the gutter, but no leafs will go in to the water storage any more.

So you can use an old USB charger or connect it directly to a TV or PC via USB.

Connecting Art and Advertising #ArtTuesday

Art and advertising have been intertwined for a long time. However, the world of art is much different from the world of advertising. NPR shares how The Los Angeles County Museum of Art makes you question what is considered art and why.

The LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art) show is called Objects of Desire: Photography and the Language of Advertising. Curator Rebecca Morse says the reconfiguration started in the 1970s, when “contemporary art photography had developed suffocating parameters.” It had to be black and white, had to measure 8×10, “and anything else wasn’t considered art.” To break those barriers, they took real ads from magazines and billboards, re-photographed and manipulated them, and got them into galleries and museums. Why? “To get viewers to look at them more critically than you would if you were just flipping through Vogue.”

A Better Museum Experience for Color-Blind Visitors #ArtTuesday

Colorblind2 1 jpg

The Dallas Museum is offering visitors with Color Vision Deficiency lenses that can help many see a broader spectrum of colors.

Via Hyperallergic:

The technology, which alleviates red-green CVD for about four out of five users with the condition, was developed by EnChroma, an independent company based in Berkeley, California. Usually genetic, red-green CVD is caused by an overlap in the red and green color receptor cones within the eye, causing the hues to become practically indistinguishable. The lenses now provided by the DMA increase the contrast between red and green color signals for users with the cone overlap, enabling them to view the world with a more enriched color field.

How a deteriorating Paul Bunyan giant is restored #ArtTuesday @ArtInsider

Joel Baker is the owner of American Giants, a company that finds and restores 1960s International Fiberglass giants. Recently insider.com posted how the team restores a Paul Bunyan muffler man.

Muffler men were large 20-foot advertising giants made in the early ‘60s by the International Fiber Glass Company. They were made to bring attention to businesses.

This particular muffler man was buried in the back of an old camping ground in Wisconsin and is estimated to be a 1964 model. When Baker first saw the figure, he noticed it had fallen forward, landing on its hands, which pushed its shoulders out and cracked them.

Once fully refurbished, the giant is taken to a location where it’ll be installed. The team takes a moment to admire their work. “[We] take time to appreciate all of our hard work in bringing another one of these giants back to life,” Joel Baker said.

This Mario Movie diorama from Boylei Hobby Time on YouTube is super impressive. The maker uses these 130mm 3V LED Filaments, which are similar to the n00ds we are currently stocking!

Like many of you, I watched the Mario Movie trailer last week. The opening sequence is more action packed and beautiful looking than I expected it to be. Bowser demolishing the castle seems a little overpowered, but it was quite impressive and looked like it would make a fun diorama.

If Rotoscoping Isn’t Animation, Nothing Is

E67b85ae406c26d7c39e029d935e80cb64 apollo lede 2x rhorizontal w700 jpg

Rotoscoping, developed by early 20th century animator Max Fleischer, is one of the earliest forms of animation used in cinema. The technique has been used to create so many classics – Cinderella, The Birds, Mary Poppins, and more. It is no longer the form du jour, and has not been widely popular for nearly a century, but it has re-entered the discourse due to Richard Linklater’s 2022 film Apollo 10 ½: A Space Age Childhood, which the Academy rejected for inclusion in the category for Best Animated Film. Linklater and the film’s animation director Tommy Pallotta are not only feeling snubbed personally, but feel this rejection speaks to a larger issue — the Academy’s refusal to consider work made for adults in the Best Animated Film category, or consider films produced by smaller, independent studios (especially those that focus on 2-D animation). Vulture spoke to Linklater, who has appealed the Academy’s decision. They also explore the controversy’s larger implications in great detail.

For a quick history on rotoscoping in cinema itself, check out this post from intofilm.

Second, the “older 2-D animation methods” Pallotta describes date back to the earliest days of cartooning. A lot of early animation is actually indistinguishable from what we’d today call special effects superimposed onto live-action filmmaking. The rotoscope itself — a machine that allows animators to trace a projected silhouette of a live-action film — was invented by visionary animator Max Fleischer in 1915 and became a cornerstone in the history of the medium. To thumb your nose at rotoscoping and its place in the art form is to disregard Cab Calloway’s dancing in Fleischer’s Minnie the Moocher, the mind-tripping weirdness of Ralph Bakshi’s The Lord of the Rings, and even Walt Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs — among literally thousands of other cartoons over the decades.

How Fake Animals Are Made For Movies And TV

This video from Insider breaks down the serious technique and artistry at work when creating fake animals for on-screen use. The level of detail is astounding! It’s also cool to see how CGI comes in to enhance these props/models, adding to the overall effect.

When a movie or TV show wants to film an action that it never could with a real animal, special effects artists have to come up with a convincing fake version. Thanks to the special effects artists at MastersFX, “The Boys” season three created several infamous scenes involving octopi and hamsters. Many instances, like in “Nightmare Alley” (2021) and “The Love Guru” (2008), involve scenes that switch between a real animal and a fake version for moments that wouldn’t be safe for a real animal to do.

No supports needed. Make sure that the bed is clean and the first layer adheres properly. It is a good torture test for print bed adhesion and filament retraction.

Good luck and happy printing ! ^-^

*Version 1.35 has improved legs so they adhere easier and make for an easy release from the bed platform. Attached g-codes are thoroughly tested and mastered for perfect results. The one for MK3S has a pause at the beginning, followed by an Easter egg.

Any comments and photos will make my day 🙂

Have you considered building a 3D project around an Arduino or other microcontroller? How about printing a bracket to mount your Raspberry Pi to the back of your HD monitor? And don’t forget the countless LED projects that are possible when you are modeling your projects in 3D!

The Adafruit Learning System has dozens of great tools to get you well on your way to creating incredible works of engineering, interactive art, and design with your 3D printer! If you’ve made a cool project that combines 3D printing and electronics, be sure to let us know, and we’ll feature it here!
