Native MP3 decoding/playback in CircuitPython @adafruit @circuitpython

Native MP3 decoding/playback in CircuitPython (video). We’re testing out a new PR in CircuitPython by JEpler. This one adds native MP3 decoding – no playback chip required! Thanks to the patent expiration, we can now distribute MP3 decoding and its a great way to support compressed audio playback. We can even play 2 mp3’s at once. More than that isn’t possible yet due to RAM constraints. I’m testing an nRF52840 BLE feather with I2S. We’ll also try SAMD51 next. SAMD21 won’t be able to do it, due to the RAM requirements.

Build a Raspberry Pi cluster computer #piday #raspberrypi @Raspberry_Pi

NewImage

Via The MagPi:

Think Raspberry Pi computers are no match for their bigger cousins? Think again, because there’s strength in numbers. PJ Evans shows you how to create a cluster computer from several Raspberry Pi computers.

Raspberry Pi computers are famously cheap and cheerful. Great for playing around with and the odd little project, right? Well, sometimes.

However, our little friend is a surprisingly powerful computer and when you get lots of them working together, amazing things can happen.

The concept of computer ‘clusters’ (many computers working together as one) is nothing new, but when you have a device as affordable as Raspberry Pi, you can start to rival much more expensive systems by using several in parallel. Here, we’ll learn how to make a cluster computer from a lot of little computers.

Child Assistant Robot #piday #raspberrypi @Raspberry_Pi

via hackster.io

Children are becoming more addicted to smartphones day by day and usually watch cartoons, youtube, and play games. In Bangladesh, kids spend over three to four hours a day on screens. A study found that screen time impacts the physical structure of children’s brains, as well as their emotional development and mental health. Unless we get control of the screens which now absorb so much of our kids’ time, it will indirectly destroy our future generation.

Listen to World War II radio recordings with a Raspberry Pi Zero #piday #raspberrypi @Raspberry_Pi

NewImage

Via RaspberryPi.org:

As good as the recordings on the Internet Archive were, it felt as if something was missing by listening to them on a modern laptop, so I wanted something to play them back on that was more evocative of that time, and would perhaps capture the feeling of listening to them on a radio set.

I also wanted to make the collection portable and to make the interface for selecting and playing the tracks as easy as possible – this wasn’t going to be screen-based!

Another important consideration was to house the project in something that would not look out of place in the living room, and not to give away the fact that it was being powered by modern tech.

GloMusic: Music Instrument Interface @Raspberry_Pi #PiDay #RaspberryPi

from Team VisteliLabs via hackster.io

Innovation on Music Instruments as an educational and creative tool has being a subject of research in the last couple of years. Having two members of our team being students from a high school with a strong musical curriculum we come up with this new instrument.

We present a new take on music interaction where a single interface (glove) can control different instruments at a time.

The Matrix Voice ESP32 give us the chance to break the process in two different tasks:

  • The collection of data using external sensors (pressure) and
  • the voice command recognition with SNIPS, instrument management and play.

The ESP32 running a Tensilica Xtensa dual-core microcontroller handle the analog input coming from the pressure sensors and communicate to the Raspberry Pi 3 controller program thru a UART channel.

Chameo: Conversational AI #piday #raspberrypi @Raspberry_Pi

via hackster.io

To build a conversation-analyzing AI, we needed to fit a form to several functions. Something that could cling. Something that could both utilize and contain 2 cameras, a Matrix Voice, and speakers. Something cute and unobtrusive you wouldn’t mind sitting on your shoulder all day. What better than a chameleon? (They’ve already got a judgy expression, why not put that to use?) Thus Chameo was born. After many design iterations, we decided on a streamlined chameleon-based look that retained 100% of that classic chameleon charisma.

Raspberry Pi 4 Commodore SX-64 Inspired Portable Computer @Raspberry_Pi #PiDay @e14presents

Check out Episode 421 of element14 Presents with Dave Darko.

Who doesn’t love portable computers from the 80’s? Too bulky to call them a laptop yet, but much more luggable than other computers from that era. Of course, the easiest way to get a box started is with aluminum extrusions, some laser cut mounts for a Raspberry Pi 4, and a mechanical keyboard to get you almost done with the basics! Dave has never built a “daily driver” Raspberry Pi build where the SD card doesn’t get reformatted with the next use of the Raspberry Pi.

Get the Live Color Scheme of NYC’s Empire State Building @Raspberry_Pi #PiDay #RaspberryPi

from Joris via hackster.io

From the actual color scheme from the Empire State Building in NYC, to my LEGO Empire State Building on the other side of the ocean. Every night my LEGO Empire State Builing has the same colors as it’s brother in NYC. Just because it can.

On a Raspberry Pi, Node-RED retrieves the current color scheme from the website of the Empire State Buildings’ color scheme. Parses this data to JSON and sends it with BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) to Adafruit Feather. The Feather takes care that a NeoPixel emits the colors to my LEGO setup.

Voice Controlled 3D Printer @Raspberry_Pi #PiDay #RaspberryPi

from Samira Peiris via hackster.io

I hate using the control panel of my 3D printer to tweak its settings. Sometimes when I need to preheat the hotend or the bed, I have to navigate through a bunch of menus using an encoder that is too outdated in this age of voice control and AI.

This project will let you control your 3D printer using a RaspberryPi and the power of your voice!

It also has some handy features such as active power monitoring, and even shuts the printer down when it exceeds a preset current limit. (specially if there’s a nasty electrical short that can lead to fire)

See project!

Open source radio system delivers emergency alerts and music to the Yukon and beyond | @Raspberry_Pi #PiDay #RaspberryPi

News radio wave lead 520

Excellent story from Opensource.com.

“Radio Rob” Hopkins lives in Tagish, Yukon, 120km south of the capital city, Whitehorse. It is here that he created Open Broadcaster, an open source system that enables small rural market radio stations to manage their operations and volunteers.

Having lived in the Yukon for 35 years, back when there was no phone or internet, Rob got into communications to set up a low-power FM (LPFM) station for the community. He wanted to make it easier to manage stations, so he made a pitch to the Yukon government for seed money to develop an application to use the internet to run a radio station and deliver the last mile through FM radio.

Dice Tumbler Cage #3DThursday #3DPrinting

Featured preview DiceTumblerPhoto1

Shared by davisfay on Thingiverse:

Add some flair to your board game nights and tabletop campaigns! Based on a wacky antique store find, this dice tumbler will roll up to three standard d20’s or up to four other polyhedral dice.

Prints with minimal support and assembles within minutes using only super glue (no tools required). The bottom plate is reversible, so it can be adapted to comfortably use regardless of whether you’re left- or right-handed.

I’m hoping to keep iterating on this in the near future, so feedback is appreciated! Please consider tossing me a tip if you like the design, it helps me keep making and sharing things.

Carousel with Micro Motor #3DPrinting #3DThursday

Featured preview Image0000b

gzumwalt shared this project on Thingiverse!

“Carousel II” is an Autodesk Fusion 360 update of my original Carousel model published over six years ago. The “secret” to how this model operates is the hidden 3D printed “sin wave” contour in the interior of the base. As the motor rotates the carousel, the lower rods of the horses ride up and down the sin wave contour thus generating the up and down motion of the horses and flags. There are four complete sin wave cycles in the base, so the horses and flags rise and fall four times each journey around the carousel.

Thanks, and our promise 2019 @adafruit

Adafruit Thanksgiving Googleplus

For about 10+ years, we’ve had a post around Thanksgiving reaffirming our thanks, and our promises, to be a good company, and a good cause. Here’s one from about 10 years ago where we promised we would not litter the site with social media buttons, and a post from 5 years ago with our promise not to have those annoying pop over newsletter windows, our promise to never spam. We promise to guard the privacy of our customers, employees, and community – we support DNT (do not track). Our promise to remain open-source, our commitment to 100% focus on new products, tutorials, writing and sharing code & hardware, making videos, and creating great content. We promise to be an inclusive community of people who like to make and share things.

There are a lot of ways people (and companies!) can say thank you, one of the ways we do that by keeping our promises.

In this competitive market, there are many choices besides Adafruit to purchase things, and we know many of you stick with us because we stick to our promises.

Thank you, everyone, for supporting Adafruit.

Happy Thanksgiving.

Noblinkie

P.S. We still kept our promise to not sell blinking Christmas trees too.
