Psychotropic Dance: Mie Yim #ArtTuesday

South Korean artist Mie Yim explores feelings of disconnectedness and longing.

The exhibition features 27 pastel drawings on colored handmade paper pinned to one wall, salon style. Two large oil paintings measuring 70 x 60 inches, both dated 2020, hang on the adjacent wall. A row of seven framed pastel drawings spreads across two adjacent walls, and a large, irregularly shaped painting — somewhere between a rectangle and an oval — was done directly on the wall adjacent to the stairs leading into the gallery. It was a lot to absorb while standing in a small gallery space, hoping no one else would enter that space until I had had a chance to look carefully at everything. This was not a show you could see quickly, which immediately won me over.

Art for Change Releases Prints to Benefit 400 Year-Old Afro-Puerto Rican Community #ArtTuesday

Art for Change is a platform that connects socially conscious art collectors with leading contemporary artists and their works. The organization recently teamed up with Corporación Piñones se Integra (COPI) on a charity print initiative.

COPI is a community-based non-profit organization in Puerto Rico that works to “transform the community into a space of greater cooperation, justice, and solidarity,” as per a statement. COPI is based in Loíza on the northeast coast of Puerto Rico and founded by Maricruz Rivera Clemente, a social worker and sociologist to protect and preserve the history and culture of a 400-year-old Afro-Puerto Rican community called Piñones.

Masters of the Art Gallery: He-Man Meets Warhol (And Kinda Duchamp) #ArtTuesday

Speaking of what is and isn’t art, somewhere between Marcel Duchamp and Andy Warhol, copies and readymades found a place in fancy art galleries. And as soon as something is in a fancy art gallery, it finds a place in art criticism. And as soon as any kind if newfangled avant-garde conceptual technique finds its way into art criticism, it gets taught in art school. And once it’s taught in art school you get repainted Masters of the Universe action figures as art. And for that, we can be thankful. Here’s more from JUXTAPOZ:

This is going to be one of the drops of the year. When Madsaki started to go down memory lane of his youth in his show 1984 this past fall at Kai Kai Kiki Galley, one of the paintings and sculptures that stood out was his He-Man and the Masters of the Universe inspired works. Perhaps we didn’t realize what a cult following the series had (like MASK and TMNT), but the way Madsaki re-imagined the series was a fresh and rather brilliant in the vein of his work.

Coding as Art #ArtTuesday

At the end of the 19th century critics debated whether or not photography can be art. Then in the first third of the 20th century there was much hand-wringing over whether or not movies can be art. You’d think folks would remember how those debates turned out when, in the late 20th century, the fancy folks furrowed their brow at the notion that video games could be art. Anyone who thinks there’s even a debate about video-games-as-art is looking the wrong direction down the 21st century. Video games, like any other medium, can produce art.

But how about coding? Here’s more from Voices in Contemporary Art:

In popular culture, programming is often depicted as lines of code flying across a hacker’s computer screen. This stereotype has led to a misconception of computer science not only as an esoteric field, bordering on the arcane, but also an uncreative one. However, Zach Lieberman is one of many artists dismantling these notions by using code as a medium to create mesmerizing animations and interactive environments. Since 2016, Lieberman has posted daily “sketches” on his Instagram (@zach.lieberman)—screen recordings of his work lasting between 15 seconds and a minute. Most of Lieberman’s sketches are created through openFrameworks, a toolkit in C++ he co-created, which programmers can download from the internet to make their own “sketches.”

Earlier in 2020, Lieberman presented “Future Sketches”, an exhibition at Artechouse DC, which utilizes creative coding—coding for artistic expression rather than for function—as a means to urge his audience to think deeper and more expansively about the possible applications of computer science.

Why visual effects artists love this shiny ball

A chrome ball is a key visual effects tool.

How do visual effects artists match their digital creations to real light? Sometimes, it involves using a very shiny ball.

Leo Bovell of Tryptyc has worked on a range of visual effects projects, but one of his most memorable experiences might be shooting in the Lincoln Memorial for an episode of “The Handmaid’s Tale.” His task? Replace the real Lincoln with a completely digital — and destroyed — version. To do it, he used an industry-standard HDRI map of the light in the scene.
