Kinetic Sculpture Gracefully Imitates a Swimming Sea Turtle #ArtTuesday

It took over six hundred parts to help make this kinetic structure by Derek Hugger move the way it does, and the way it does it moves is just like a sea turtle. Here’s more from COLOSSAL

“A non-trivial amount of time was spent watching and studying videos of turtles swimming,” explains [Derek Hugger]. “Getting the motions of Carapace to closely resemble the motions of real turtles was a true challenge. Countless hours were spent refining the sculpture’s motion to be as lifelike as possible, even before any mechanisms were developed to drive those motions.”

Underwater Wheelchair Brings Artist Sue Austin Beneath the Sea #ArtTuesday

Here’s what artist Sue Austin does: she make movies of her underwater exploration using an adapted submersible wheelchair. Here’s more from COLOSSAL

In the film, Austin uses her arms to guide her through the water, and she wears a summery dress with her long hair flowing freely, as she navigates through schools of fish and past massive coral reefs. Her underwater wheelchair is adapted from a standard-issue National Health Service chair, with battery powered propellers and perspex aerofoils to control turns. Austin hopes that the adaptations will be more widely available at diving centers in the future to make diving more inclusive.

Building a Raspberry Pi Warehouse Shipping Tracker

In the TotalBoat warehouse, they had a data deadzone at the shipping station when determining final package processing times. They decided to create a shipping tracker using a touchscreen Raspberry Pi housed in an aluminum case.

In this video, they run through the trial and error process they went through in trying to CNC aluminum and riveting and hammer-forming the resulting aluminum parts.

Top 100 3D Renders from the Internet’s Largest CG Challenge

Really awesome video from pwnisher on YouTube.

Over the last month, I challenged 3D artists with the Alternate Realities CG challange. I provided an animation for everyone to work from, and the results were stunning. 2,400 artists delivered, the top 100 were chosen for this montage, and 5 of them walked away with insane prizes from Rokoko, Wacom, Quixel, PNY and Aftershokz (I personally reached out to my favorite companies in order to give away the tools I use every day.)
