Raspberry Pi OS 64-bit finally exits Beta #RaspberryPi @Raspberry_Pi @TomsHardware

February 2, 2022 marks the day that 64-bit flavor of Raspberry Pi OS moves from a rather lengthy beta, into the world at large. The news, announced via a blog post by Gordon Holingworth, Chief Product Officer at Raspberry Pi Ltd sees the 64-bit OS move to being released. But this new release isn’t set to replace the 32-bit version just yet, according to a Tom’s Hardware article by Les Pounder.

For now, the 32-bit image is still the default and recommended image promoted by the Raspberry Pi Imager tool. This move ensures that new users can get up and running no matter what model of Pi they may have. If you really want to take the 64-bit image for a test drive, it can be found under Raspberry Pi OS (other) via the Choose OS option.

We asked Hollingworth if the 32-bit OS will be phased out as more 64-bit compatible models are released? “While we manufacture hardware with 32-bit processors then we will still continue with the 32-bit recommended image.  (We still make original Pi model B’s because we always said we would continue to do so while it was possible),” he said.

For now, 32-bit and 64-bit will run in parallel, affording users of Pis both new and old the opportunity to squeeze the most from the popular single board computer. But how long until we see the 64-bit OS become the dominant choice?

BASIC Interpreter for the Raspberry Pi Pico #BASIC #RaspberryPiPico #Programming

The PicoMite is a Raspberry Pi Pico running the free MMBasic interpreter.

MMBasic is a modern Microsoft BASIC compatible implementation of the BASIC language with floating point, integer and string variables, arrays, long variable names, a built in program editor and many other features.

Using MMBasic you can use communications protocols such as I2C or SPI to get data from a variety of sensors. You can save data to an SD card, display information on color LCD displays, measure voltages, detect digital inputs and drive output pins to turn on lights, relays, etc. All from inside this low cost microcontroller.

This is a port of the BASIC that’s used on the Maximite virtual retro computer platform, which means that there are many working examples out there for you to crib from, and even a forum. Add in the incredibly nice user manual and tutorial (PDF), and you’ve got the perfect weekend afternoon.

The PicoMite firmware is totally free to download and use.

Adding MIDI to an organ pedal keyboard with Raspberry Pi Pico and CircuitPython #CircuitPython #MIDI @diyelectromusic

diyelectromusic on Twitter has added MIDI to an old organ pedal keyboard using a Raspberry Pi Pico programmed in CircuitPython.

Quite a number of years ago, I found an old set of organ pedals and MIDI’d them up by the crude method of wiring the pedal switches onto the connectors for the keys of an old Amstrad MIDI keyboard… It was the technology and expertise I had at the time!

I stumbled across them a few weeks back in the garage and thought it was time to bring the idea back to life with a microcontroller.
