Reddit user Dungeon_Master_Dan built this DIY VR headset. Picked up by Toms Hardware:

The headset works as both a VR and augmented reality (AR) system. It uses a Raspberry Pi, infrared (IR) camera and an HDMI-compatible head-mounted display (HMD). As of posting, Dungeon_Master_Dan has demonstrated three separate functions for the Pi VR headset: AR, a virtual desktop and a self-contained VR arcade that uses RetroPie.

How does it work ?

You press the blue button – it starts to blink – and after 3 seconds a picture is taken. On the other side of the camera there’s a monitor that is showing a countdown and after the picture is taken, the preview of the photo.

You can now choose to send it to Twitter and Facebook or cancel and try again. It’s that simple.

Everything is programmed in Python, making use of the PI framebuffer – No Xorg, no GUI are used.

This is a very good internet radio, but more than that, it is a weather station, a ticker and a domotica system as well.

And it is:

  • very cheap works really good
  • very easy to build and operateportable due to the easy connection to wifi
  • No programming or soldering skills needed.

Just buy the components, connect some wires between them and thats it!. Oh, and burn an image of the radio operating system on an sd card. It would be a nice birthday present as it is very easy to operate. This radio has a lot of nice features. All controllable via a webinterface.

STEM + Homeschooling for your Kids #STEM #HomeSchooling

As many of us are experiencing shelter at home with the coronavirus pandemic, those of us with kids are experiencing homeschooling for the first time. My 11 year old daughter has virtual classes with her 6th grade class but in a limited schedule. If you are a busy working parent and need to plan your children’s home school schedule, what kind of educational resources are out there?

Diana Eng (Fashion Tech Designer/NYC Resistor Cofounder) and I are currently working on a new STEM themed program, STEM Chat, for Adafruit. We hope that we can share it with everyone in the near future. In the meantime, I wanted to share some of my favorite links for STEM at home as well as a couple of personal links from Diana and me. For this post, I will note the sites that are a part of social media networks like Facebook video or Instagram. As more sites and social media links pop up, I will keep sharing them here on Adafruit. Please feel free to comment to this post if you have any interesting STEM sites to share. Pictured above is the San Francisco Exploratorium’s Learning Toolbox which teaches kids all about COVID-19 Science and viruses.

In regards to homeschooling, I have found Jennifer Mackintosh, a homeschooling mom to five in Alabama to be a wonderful resource. Please check out her blog post on educational resources and free printables you can use for lesson planning (for multiple children too). We can do it parents!

NASA Explorers Series (Facebook Page/Videos)

This is a wonderful video series that my friend and former MAKE/CRAFT colleague Rachel Barry narrates. Learn about the orbiting laboratory, meet the scientists and see the astronauts in training. Each video is around 6 minutes long and there are lots of behind the scenes clips on their Facebook page. You can also catch  NASA Explorers Season 4 on NASA’s You Tube.

My daughter is doing a group project in her History class using Tinkercad to build a future city. (They have also done coding projects with greek history as the theme.) Tinkercad comes from Autodesk and kids can do 3D design, electronics and design with code.

Scratch is from MIT and it’s a place kids can create stories, games and animations while sharing it with the world. There is even a fun little section called Quarantine Gym where kids can share ideas on what kind of sports and movement they can do to avoid boredom.

PBS Learning

SF/Bay Area based KQED and PBS have curated free educational videos and lessons to help teachers and now parents like you that are homeschooling.  For all grade levels, the lessons cover subjects such as social studies, english, science, math, art and there is a special preschool section for the younger kids. Monterey Bay Aquarium Live Cams

From 7am-7pm PST, you and your kids can relax watching the live jelly cam or see the cute sea otters swim and play with each other. There are 10 different live cams to choose from: Aviary, Coral Reef, Jellyfish, Kelp Forest, Monterey Bay, Moon Jellyfish, Open Sea, Penguin, Sea Otter and Shark.

The San Diego Zoo similarly has a bunch of live cams up for their animals. You can also see an archive of their Panda Cams as the pandas have since returned back to China. Adventures in Tinkering STEM Series

Adventures in Tinkering is a personal project of mine that I have been working on for the last few years. I decided to put this book online a few months ago and will build a site around it (for now it lives on my blog). The first web book in the Tinkering series is called, “The Tinkering Contest” and also features a DIY project to make a no-sew recycled t-shirt tote bag. The series follows along 3rd grader Chloe who loves to tinker and her talking Pomeranian Lulu who brings in comedy and trouble. My goal is to create stories to empower young girls to learn about STEM through fun adventure stories and DIY projects. This book is geared towards young readers grades 1-4. Stay Home: Learn about the Science of the Presidency in Adafruit’s “Political Science”

In this series of Stay Home posts, we’re re-publishing and highlighting some of the Adafruit blog’s original editorial content. With so many of us working remotely or otherwise staying home, our hope is that you might find something interesting on here to entertain you through what can feel like some pretty long days. We hope also to inspire you to try and use this time creatively if you can (earlier in the week we shared a Best-Of the MusicMakers Q&A series where musicians like Frankie Cosmos and Jeffrey Lewis talk creative spaces and embracing technology).

Today we’re looking back at the brief series of Political Science features that we ran back in 2017. These three posts dug into the lives and careers of three US Presidents and how they used and interacted with the sciences. Now more than ever, the value and importance of science to government, reform and essential legislation can’t be overstated.

Political Science #1 – Jimmy Carter: Faith & Physics  (Read)

In Political Science #1, we looked at the life and presidency of Jimmy Carter. This included his engineering education, assignment to the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission as a Lieutenant in the Navy, the Cold War and SALT II, space exploration, the National Energy Act, solar panels on the White House, The Carter Center’s efforts to eradicate preventable disease, reporting a UFO sighting and beyond. Political Science #2 – James Garfield: Triumph Through Tragedy (Read)

In Political Science #2, we examined the short life and brief Presidency of James Garfield and some of the effects that his illness and death can be argued to have had on medical innovations and standards in the United States. The shooting of James Garfield can be tied into the history of the metal detector (courtesy of Alexander Graham Bell), air conditioning, criminal insanity and the acceptance of antiseptics in American medicine.  Read more.

Political Science #3 – Franklin Delano Roosevelt: The First Modern President (Read)

In Political Science #3, we looked into the one-of-a-kind life and career of FDR who served through two world wars, the great depression and the dust bowl. Occupying the offices of State Senator, Assistant Secretary of the Navy and Governor of New York in addition to an unprecedented twelve years in highest office, Roosevelt had many opportunities to to experiment and innovate with the technologies of communication, conservation, destruction and his own mobility. I hope you’ll find some entertainment in these articles. Perhaps you can use this time to add something to the discussion of the value of Science in Government. These posts are far from exhaustive and I’m no historian (I’m not even an American!) and there’s many figures worth assessing for how they’ve approached the sciences and the good and bad that they have left behind. If you can, take some time to dig into our history and connect it with our shared present and future.
