Build a Raspberry Pi chartplotter for your boat @Raspberry_Pi #PiDay #RaspberryPi

via RasperryPi.org

Earlier this year, James Conger built a chartplotter for his boat using a Raspberry Pi…The entire build cost approximately $350. It incorporates a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+, dAISy AIS receiver HAT, USB GPS module, and touchscreen display, all hooked up to his boat.

Perfect for navigating the often foggy San Francisco Bay, the chartplotter allows James to track the position, speed, and direction of major vessels in the area, superimposed over high-quality NOAA nautical charts.

Smart Door Lock Using Raspberry Pi and GSM modemSim800 RFID #piday #raspberrypi @Raspberry_Pi

via Soorajece on instructables

In this tutorial, I go over how to integrate the EM-18 RFID Reader module with a Raspberry Pi board. I also show how to integrate an actuator, in this case an Relay, to respond to a correct reading from the RFID module. This actuator can be a solenoid lock, a speaker, or even a web interface that logs data. And also interface with a GSM module to give message notification. I discuss how this design can be implemented as an RFID smart lock.

Dr. Tape Head – The perfect lab companion @Raspberry_Pi #PiDay #RaspberryPi

Wonderfully wacky build from Martin Mander up on Hackster.io.

Dr. Tape Head is the perfect spooky companion when you’re working late in the lab! He uses Amazon’s Polly service to read out text from a Google Sheets spreadsheet, populated by the IFTTT service and gathered from Twitter, SMS messages and camera motion alerts. He’s even integrated with Google Assistant so you can remotely dictate tailored messages to spook those pesky trick-or-treaters.

Interactive Tabletop RPG/Dungeons & Dragons Table With Raspberry Pi @Raspberry_Pi #PiDay #RaspberryPi

via The MagPie Magazine

The real magic for this interactive table comes from Roll20 – it’s a free online service that is normally used to let people remotely connect to each other for a TTRPG game. As well as being able to talk to your group and GM, you can roll dice within the app and control tokens of your characters.

It also allows a GM to display a map that has a ‘fog of war’ – areas that the players cannot see. From their computer, they can reveal the map as the players explore. Sign up for an account – if you’re the GM, you might want a secondary account to act as the ‘player’ account for the screen.

Second Wind Brings the Winds Around a Ponderosa Pine Inside #piday #raspberrypi @Raspberry_Pi

Each fan interacts with a suspended vellum structure which moves more or less depending on wind speed. The vellum is painted with an ink made of fermented pine needles from the tree, and depicts changes in canopy density based on height.

Great Portable Raspberry Pi 4 Computer Build @Raspberry_Pi #PiDay #RaspberryPi

from HackSpace magazine editor Ben Everard via RaspberryPi.org

When Raspberry Pi 4 came out, I was pleasantly surprised by how the more powerful processor and enhanced memory allowed it to be a serious contender for a desktop computer. However, what if you don’t have a permanent desk? What if you want a more portable option? There are plenty of designs around for laptops built using Raspberry Pi computers, but I’ve never been that keen on the laptop form factor. Joining the screen and keyboard together always makes me feel like I’m either slumped over the screen or the keyboard is too high. I set out to build a portable computer that fitted my way of working rather than simply copying the laptop design that’s been making our backs and fingers hurt for the past decade.
