Apex Legends Octane Stim prop #3DThursday #3DPrinting

captainserious shares:

I was asked to print an Octane Stim. There are already a few models here on Thingiverse but they either require color changes or severe supports.

I designed this Octane Stim to be easy to print, so it’s not an exact perfect replica. The intent was to be able to print with no supports and no color changes.

The files will create a 25 mm (1-inch) diameter and 130 mm (5.2 inch) long prop. I think this might be too small. So, please consider scaling the size in your slicer.

I glued the parts together after printing. You can see the cross section in one of the images to help with orienting the parts during assembly.

Every Thursday is #3dthursday here at Adafruit! The DIY 3D printing community has passion and dedication for making solid objects from digital models. Recently, we have noticed electronics projects integrated with 3D printed enclosures, brackets, and sculptures, so each Thursday we celebrate and highlight these bold pioneers!

Have you considered building a 3D project around an Arduino or other microcontroller? How about printing a bracket to mount your Raspberry Pi to the back of your HD monitor? And don’t forget the countless LED projects that are possible when you are modeling your projects in 3D!

The 1.2 Petabyte Raspberry Pi disk array now works! #RaspberryPi @geerlingguy @Raspberry_Pi

Just three weeks ago, we posted about the Petabyte storage array for a Raspberry Pi. It was cool but not working 100%.

In an update, Jeff Geerling posts:

60 hard drives, 1 Raspberry Pi — And now it actually works! It’s not the fastest storage server in town, but it’s good for about 70 MB/sec write speeds and sucks down about 500 Watts of power.

With a number of fixes, such as upgrading firmware on the drive controllers, Jeff was able to get the array stable and measure the power usage in various modes.

Check out the details in the YouTube video below. Well done Jeff!

New gallery exhibition explores postpartum with AI and synthetic breast milk #ArtTuesday

New gallery exhibition explores postpartum with AI and synthetic breast milk Gothamist

Ani Liu has already proven her ability to harness science for art. In her newest exhibit she focuses her talents on the postpartum experience. Via Gothamist:

Liu became a parent shortly before the pandemic, and she channeled that experience into a new show called “Ecologies of Care,” to process her postpartum period and the communities in her life that helped her through that time.

“I hope that this can allow new parents to bond and maybe feel less lonely,” she said. “In making it, I was questioning how do we create better communities of care? I made all of this work before the formula shortage, before our reproductive rights were even more under threat. When I look at this, I’m hoping that you see this particular slice of love and labor.”

“Ecologies of Care” is on view at the Cuchifritos Gallery + Project Space in New York City until July 30, 2022.

The Desert Art of California #ArtTuesday

From the high desert and Joshua Trees of 29 Palms to the arid desert of Coachella valley, to the off the grid art of Slab City, to the surprisingly weird constructions in Palm Springs, there is a lot to see in the wild lands two and a half hours east of Los Angeles. Here’s more from JUXTAPOZ:

My last stop is the best. Nestled in a community of mid-century modern mansions in the Movie Colony section of Palm Springs. Robolights is the outdoor art antithesis to the polished, hyper-curated Desert X. The brainchild of a primarily self-taught artist named Kenny Irwin Jr., Robolights is a sprawling compound of fantastical creations the artist began building in 1986 on the four-acre plot surrounding his childhood home.

The living installation, which Irwin Jr. works on between 8-10 hours a day, consists of a dense maze of interlocking pathways bordered by artworks made from found or donated objects that he has transformed into a psychedelic Wonkaland set to a soundtrack of campy classical music. There are 50-foot-tall robots, hot pink giraffe bots, a Christmas sleigh overtaken by a deranged Easter Bunny, post-apocalyptic “nuclear elves” prancing across a tennis court, and a village made entirely from microwaves.

The Art of Level Design in The Legend of Zelda #ArtTuesday

Looking at The Legend of Zelda in the 2021 might seem like a waste of time. But looking at something that seems, at first, very simple, can help us understand the fundamentals of game design. Here’s more from Gamasutra:

As it turns out, the dungeon layouts are very carefully planned and the flow is very cleverly executed…. The critical path is the shortest path through a level without using secrets, shortcuts, or cheats. Basically, it’s the path the designer intends the player to take through the level unless she gets really clever.

…

For each of the dungeons, the critical path is almost always linear. There are very few instances where the player is required to re-traverse ground she’s already seen. The only exception to the linearity rule tends to be two or three rooms at the beginning of the dungeons that allow you to choose between a small subset of rooms.
