‘Autonomous “Follow Me” Cooler’ Ensures a Cold Beverage is Always Within Reach

With a top speed of “chill” and a custom GPS app – not to mention a motorized lid – a crisp cool beverage is always within reach with this ‘Autonomous “Follow Me” Cooler.’ The ability to send waypoints to the base station to have the cooler journey to a nearby location is also a smart addition.

In this project, we use an Arduino Uno to build an autonomous “follow me” cooler. The robot cooler connects to a smartphone via Bluetooth and uses GPS to navigate. All the electronics will be contained in the base so that other objects can be carried as well.

In this video we show off our DIY Arduino Uno powered autonomous “follow me” cooler. The cooler connects to your smartphone via bluetooth and uses GPS coordinates streamed from your phone to follow you. All the electronics are be contained in the base so that other objects can be carried as well. It’s great to use at a tailgate or a BBQ in the park.

Triple-axis Magnetometer (Compass) Board – HMC5883L: We based this breakout on a popular and well loved magnetometer, the HMC5883L. This compact sensor uses I2C to communicate and its very easy to use. Since it’s a 3.3V max chip, we added circuitry to make it 5V-safe logic and power, for easy use with either 3 or 5V microcontrollers. Simply connect VCC to +3-5V and ground to ground. Then read data from the I2C clock and data pins. There’s also a Data Ready pin you can use to speed up reads (check the datasheet for details) Read more.
