Sony Music to recommence production of vinyl after 28 years

As reported on NPR, Sony will begin pressing vinyl records again in early 2018.

Sony Music is preparing to make its own vinyl records again in Japan…The company says it’s installing record-cutting equipment and enlisting the help of older engineers who know how to reproduce the best sound.

This comes as a positive sign that the industry sees the obvious vinyl resurgence as long term. It will also offer potential relief to the labels, distributors and stores who have found that reluctance to invest in new pressing plants has resulted in tremendous manufacturing delays, as a handful of plants struggle to meet the demand, particularly at a busy production time like Record Store Day.
