“a sensitivity to ephemera”: the Mono no Aware Painted Photographs by Gabriella Achadinha and Marlize Eckard | #ArtTuesday #celebratephotography

These paintings on photographs are simultaneously spooky and surreal/wonderful captures of modern life:

物の哀れ – Mono no Aware is the work of photographer Gabriella Achadinha and illustrator and designer Marlize Eckard which infuses painting with photography. This experimental project was shot in Japan and Seoul, South Korea.

The photos were captured by Gabriella and painted over by Marlize with acrylic paint to create intriguing images.

“Mono no Aware” can actually be translated as “a sensitivity to ephemera”, the feeling that nothing is permanent and things can only be used for a short time.

For this series, Gabriella notes that she took photos with subjects that stood out and sees the output as “an almost nostalgic, wistful acceptance of that which cannot be forever held onto.”
