Strong and Stable Magnetic Levitation

via rgco on instructables

Earnshaw’s theorem from 1842 demonstrates that you can’t get a stable stationary equilibrium with magnets. But there are loopholes! If we lift a magnet with an electromagnet and then reduce the current when it gets to close it can actually float in still air!

A levitating globe can be bought in many versions online, and there are other instructables here that show how to make one yourself.

However, I found that some use very sensitive Hall-switches that result in very little lift, of the order of 1 gram, others use microcontrollers, others components that are hard to come by. Also GreatScott made a great video on the subject, but he had trouble with stability, probably because he put the hall sensor under the levitating object instead of close to the electromagnet. The design presented here is very similar to that from a 2004 MIT paper but uses more commonly available components.

Windows 10 ARM on Raspberry Pi 4 is off to a good start #piday #raspberrypi @Raspberry_Pi

Windows 10 on Raspberry Pi 3 696x464

Via Windows Latest:

The Raspberry Pi 4 takes Pi to another level and performance is much better than prior Raspberry Pis. If you want to run Windows 10 on your Raspberry Pi, you’ve to use Windows 10 IoT Core, which has been designed for the Internet of Things (IoT) gadgets – but IoT Core spin of Microsoft’s OS is not as good as the full version of the OS.

The hack was previously limited to the Raspberry Pi 3 model, but now it’s apparently possible to run Windows 10, again the ARM version, on the Pi 4. This is achieved via an installer tool called ‘WoA Deployer’, which basically allows anyone with basic technical knowledge to put Windows 10 ARM on supported hardware.

Doorbell With Face Recognition #piday #raspberrypi @Raspberry_Pi

via Erientes on instructables

The doorbell system is mainly designed for elderly or vision-impaired persons and is pretty straight-forward in its workings. In short, the doorbell switch triggers the camera to obtain footage. Next, faces in the footage are detected and matched with a whitelist and blacklist. The occupant gets clear visual feedback by a clear traffic light display. Hereby, the green, yellow or red light indicate that the person(s) are on the whitelist, unknown to the system or on the blacklist respectively. If the yellow or red light is triggered, the photo is sent by a Telegram bot to inform/warn a relative or caretaker.

Why you should run a 64 bit OS on your Raspberry Pi4 #piday #raspberrypi @Raspberry_Pi

Raspbench 1

Via Matteo Croce on Medium:

The Rpi4 comes with a quad core ARM Cortex A72, up to 4 GB of RAM and a gigabit ethernet port, at a very low price of 35 $.
Raspberry provides Raspbian (a Debian derivative), an already ready distro for their products, so I put it on an sd card to boot it quickly.
I was looking at the syslog and I noticed that, uh, both the kernel and the whole userland are compiled as armv7, which means 32 bit ARM.

I know for sure that the RPi4 is 64 bit capable, so I refused to run a 32 bit OS on it. I get another sd card and I installed Debian on it. A lean and mean Debian compiled as aarch64, which means 64 bit ARM.
As soon as the 64 bit OS booted, I was curious to know how much it performs better than the 32 bit one, so I did some tests.

How Memories Form and Fade #Neurology #Neurobiology #Memory @Caltech

Researchers at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) have discovered that strong memories are encoded by teams of neurons working together in synchrony. Why is it that you can remember the name of your childhood best friend that you haven’t seen in years yet easily forget the name of a person you just met a moment ago? In other words, why are some memories stable over decades, while others fade within minutes?

“Imagine you have a long and complicated story to tell. In order to preserve the story, you could tell it to five of your friends and then occasionally get together with all of them to retell the story and help each other fill in any gaps that an individual had forgotten. Additionally, each time you retell the story, you could bring new friends to learn and therefore help preserve it and strengthen the memory. In an analogous way, your own neurons help each other out to encode memories that will persist over time.”

Memory is so fundamental to human behavior that any impairment to memory can severely impact our daily life. Memory loss that occurs as part of normal aging can be a significant handicap for senior citizens. Moreover, memory loss caused by several diseases, most notably Alzheimer’s, has devastating consequences that can interfere with the most basic routines including recognizing relatives or remembering the way back home.

This work suggests that memories might fade more rapidly as we age because a memory is encoded by fewer neurons, and if any of these neurons fail, the memory is lost. The study suggests that one day, designing treatments that could boost the recruitment of a higher number of neurons to encode a memory could help prevent memory loss.

The paper appears in the August 23 of the journal Science and is described in this article (I think….)

ChatterBox – the Object Translator #piday #raspberrypi @Raspberry_Pi

via 8BitsAndAByte on instructables

Every good invention needs at least two parts, a pokey part and a carrying bit.
We start by building the pokey part. It consists of two 3D printed components, one made with black filament and the other with clear plastic.

The top part has a large indent to hold our NeoPixel Ring.
The bottom component has a button hole and tubing for the wiring.
Both the STL files are included in this step.

To give it the right look and feel we are going to age it a bit. A delightful afternoon with fire, knives and sanding paper does the trick.

The last todo is adding the telephone wire. Solder the wires from the electronics to the telephone cord.

Ghost-Hunting in Schools with Raspberry Pi @Raspberry_Pi #PiDay #RaspberryPi

via RaspberryPi.org

The Digital Ghost Hunt combines coding education, augmented reality, and live performance to create an immersive storytelling experience. It begins when a normal school assembly is disrupted by the unscheduled arrival of Deputy Undersecretary Quill of the Ministry of Real Paranormal Hygiene, there to recruit students into the Department’s Ghost Removal Section. She explains that the Ministry needs the students’ help because children have the unique ability to see and interact with ghostly spirits.

Under the tutelage of Deputy Undersecretary Quill and Professor Bray (the Ministry’s chief scientist), the young ghost-hunters learn how to program and use their own paranormal detectors. These allow students to discover ghostly traces, translate Morse code using flickering lights, and find messages left in ultraviolet ectoplasm. Meanwhile, the ghost communicates through a mixture of traditional theatrical effects and the poltergeist potential of smart home technology. Together, students uncover the ghost’s identity, discover her reason for haunting the building, unmask a dastardly villain, find a stolen necklace, clear the ghost’s name, right an old wrong, and finally set the ghost free.

15ccm Compressed Air Engine #3DPrinting #3DThursday

Featured preview DSC4989

MarlonMTB shared this project on Thingiverse!

This engine is inspired by Tom Stantons Compressed Air Engine.
But with some small changes. Toms engine has about 2.7ccm, mine has about 15mm capacity.
It has way more torque at higher pressures. I tested it with up to 16 bar (232psi). But of cause it’s less efficient, even if it runs on very low pressure too (about 0.2 bar or 3 psi).
I didn’t like the solution to glue the cylinder head to the crankcase. So in my version they are screwed with 4 M3x10 screws. Just like the cylinder head.
It needs a heavy flywheel to run smooth. I use a 160mm rotor from a bicycle. But you can easily make your own (for dimensions take a look into the photos if you haven`t already).

Every Thursday is #3dthursday here at Adafruit! The DIY 3D printing community has passion and dedication for making solid objects from digital models. Recently, we have noticed electronics projects integrated with 3D printed enclosures, brackets, and sculptures, so each Thursday we celebrate and highlight these bold pioneers!

Have you considered building a 3D project around an Arduino or other microcontroller? How about printing a bracket to mount your Raspberry Pi to the back of your HD monitor? And don’t forget the countless LED projects that are possible when you are modeling your projects in 3D!

The Adafruit Learning System has dozens of great tools to get you well on your way to creating incredible works of engineering, interactive art, and design with your 3D printer! If you’ve made a cool project that combines 3D printing and electronics, be sure to let us know, and we’ll feature it here!
