The Story of Malta’s Stolen Caravaggio #ArtNews

An interesting story of art and crime.

via ARTNews

How do you recover a stolen masterpiece? As most experts will tell you, it’s not as easy as you might think. In fact, scores of stolen works over the years have never even been recovered. That’s the case with famous heists—for example, the 13 masterpieces from Boston’s Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in 1990—as well as lesser-known ones. But there are fortunate cases where the works were indeed found, and one involves a Caravaggio and Father Marius Zarafa, a Maltese priest and art historian.

Zarafa was the director of Malta’s National Museums in 1984, when, during visiting hours, thieves took Caravaggio’s St. Jerome in Valletta. Displayed in St. John’s Co-Cathedral, an important example of High Baroque architecture, Caravaggio’s St. Jerome was stolen from the cathedral’s attached museum galleries with precision. How it was lost—and, later, found—is the subject of a new episode of PBS’s long-running series Secrets of the Dead. The story, as art historian Sandro Debono points out, feels almost too good to be true. As he recalls in the documentary, “This theft reads very much like a piece of fiction.”

Research Becomes Art #ArtTuesday

Simón(e) Sun uses experimental data to create her work. Like many artists, she uses images for her visual artists, but her process to transform experimental data into music is unique. Here’s more via Art the Science:

I use experimental data as the “raw material” for my artwork, whether it’s visual art or music. In each work, I attempt to balance “letting the data speak for itself” and “using the data to present an idea.” My illustrations are an example of this, but I can better describe my process through my forthcoming music album, Zero Divide Zero.

I study synaptic plasticity, which is the ability for synapses—connections between neurons—to change with new information. Scientists think that synaptic plasticity could be the biological substrate of learning and memory. In my experiments, I record electric currents from neurons called “miniature excitatory postsynaptic currents,” or “minis” for short. These minis are a way to measure the strength of a neuron’s synapses. The bigger the mini, the stronger the synapse. I created a computer program that converts three properties of minis, (1) when a mini happens, (2) its amplitude, (3) and its decay (see illustration), into a musical score. (1) Determines when a note is played. (2) Determines what note of the scale. (3) Determines how long the note is played. Afterward, I decide on instrumentation, rhythmic meter, and other music composition elements to compose these songs with the overarching goal of expressing the scientific method.

First 500 Highlights Black Women in Architecture

via dezeen

American architect Tiara Hughes has launched the First 500 website, an online platform dedicated to showcasing the work of Black women architects working in the US.

Hughes founded the First 500 organisation in 2018 after learning that less than 500 of the 100,000 licensed architects in the US were Black women.

In October, the architect launched a website to further the initiative’s mission in achieving racial justice in the architecture industry.

“First 500 aims to inspire Black women and girls to infinitely increase our licensed representation in the industry to better reflect the environments we serve,” Hughes told Dezeen.

“The website is a resource and reference to learn more about the incredible contributions of black women to the built environment.”

Spraying Resin on 3D Prints?

Here’s an interesting experiment I never would have thought of. The Creative Collector tried spraying resin onto 3D prints using an airbrush.

Further experimentation is needed, but the results are interesting.

WARNING: As people have rightly pointed out in the comments, aeroslizing resin is no joke and (unlike the maker in this video), if try such an experiment, you better wear a really good respirator. Again, this is an experiment, not a recommended practice.

We have gotten a number of negative comments about this video. One commenter pointed out this video from Panda Props using a paint-on resin finishing process — MUCH safer!

Recreating the Gom Jabbar box from Dune with Raspberry Pi and Python #RaspberryPi #Python #Dune @instructables

A demo of Michael D’Argenio’s re-creation of the Gom Jabbar scenes from Dune using a Raspberry Pi Zero programmed in Python.

In this pivotal scene, the Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam tests Paul Atreides. The Gom Jabbar is the name for the handheld needle tipped with meta-cyanide poison. When driven into a victim, it brings almost instantaneous death. The Gom Jabbar test was used to determine whether an individual’s awareness was stronger than their animal instincts. If their awareness of the Gom Jabbar’s presence was strong enough, it would override their instincts to withdraw from the immense pain of the test.

In this project, I created a Python script that uses gpiozero to interface with an HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor to detect the presence of a hand and a servo to actuate the Gom Jabbar. Multiple processes are used: one for playing the audio and the other to constantly check the ultrasonic sensor to see whether the hand has been removed from the box and actuate the servo motor with the pin.

Brilliant is Beautiful: 2022 Princesses with Powertools Calendar #WomenInSTEM @reinventedmag

Reinvented Magazine Releases their 2022 Princesses with Powertools Calendar

2022 Princesses with Powertools -- All 12 princess photos in a square around the cover image

MELBOURNE, FL (November 29, 2021) — Princess calendars may be a tale as old as time, but the nonprofit Reinvented Inc. is rewriting the narrative with it’s 2022 Princesses with Powertools Calendar, featuring 12 women and nonbinary individuals who work in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) and the trades dressed as popular princesses.

The calendar is based on one of Reinvented Inc.’s most popular hands-on, interactive programs: Princesses with Power Tools. The volunteer princesses have taught over 5,000 kids, most between the ages of 5 and 13, to use their first power tool, ranging from public school classrooms to the World Maker Faire. While the program had to be put on hold during the pandemic, Reinvented Inc. was finally able to bring it back this year, attending 3 events in 3 different states!

The calendar depicts 12 inspiring women and nonbinary individuals in STEM and the trades each doing their work in a princess gown. This year’s lineup features four doctorates or Ph.D. candidates, one AAAS IF/THEN Ambassador, seven women of color, and eight content creators. Bios for all 12 of this year’s princesses can be found on the Princesses with Powertools Calendar website. Calendars are currently on sale and can be purchased directly on Reinvented Magazine’s website: https://www.reinventedmagazine.com/princesses-with-powertools-calendar

The goal, according to Reinvented Inc. Founder and full-time aerospace engineer Caeley Looney, is to show girls that they don’t need to choose between being a princess and being a scientist or engineer. STEM fields and femininity are not mutually exclusive. “Growing up, I was told that in order to be an engineer, I had to ‘look like an engineer.’ I had to lose my sense of style and pieces of how I expressed my personality in order to fit in. But why? Children are shown that girls in STEM fields are tomboys, that princesses in STEM don’t exist. We set out to change this,” Caeley explains.

Knowing firsthand the setbacks women face when trying to enter STEM fields, Looney founded Reinvented Inc. and launched the nation’s first ever print magazine written for girls in STEM, Reinvented Magazine, in 2019. Their mission is to empower and inspire the next generation of young girls to pursue their passions in science and technology.

“When less than 28% of the STEM workforce is women or minorities, we know something needs to change. I hope that we are able to get these calendars into homes and classrooms all over the world, so girls know that they can do whatever they set their mind to,” Looney says.

About Reinvented Inc.

Reinvented Inc., recently merged with Beauty and the Bolt, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that aims to empower and inspire the next generation of young girls to pursue their passions in STEM. Through the creation of Reinvented Magazine, they are able to bring professional, female role models in STEM into the homes of young girls worldwide.

Boba Roller #3DThursday #3DPrinting

Boba Roller by nyop Thingiverse

Be prepared for the next boba shortage with this print from nyop on Thingiverse:

If you’ve tried making boba at home, you’ll know that it is a massive pain to cut and roll each ball. If you haven’t, know that this is a massive pain. Also definitely try making boba at home!

I designed it to roll balls of 8mm so you’ll want to roll each strip into a diameter slightly smaller than 1cm. Dust the surfaces of the tool with tapioca flour to make the shaping easier. I’ve found that dusting the strips themselves works well too. I like to press the lid down against the table and push it back and forth.

You can only print part1-3, for single-use without the base.

All parts are designed especially for 3D printers, so you can try to print it without support, but I recommend printing it with support for good assembly quality.

The infill should be larger than 60% for the requirement of solid.

U.S. Penny Screwdriver for Sewing Machines #3DPrinting #3DThursday

U S Penny Screwdriver for Sewing Machines by elhalpern Thingiverse

elhalpern shared this project on Thingiverse!

Necessity is the mother of invention !

Working on older sewing machines is always annoying when I have to remove the slot-head screws on the thread plate near the foot.

Manufacturers are kind enough to use screw that can be driven with a coin, but the space you need to work in is too tight to precisely hold & twist a coin. Human thumb and index fingers are awkward in this space around the foot of a sewing machine.

This design solves the problem by transforming a U.S. Penny into a screw-driver that works ergonomically allowing precise control of the coin, and the ability to spin the coin and a targeted screw without damaging the slot of the screw.

Print fits perfectly and smooth to the calliper. The additional srew for clamping is not really necessary, but where designed because sometimes you need to measure a difference between to hole lenghts. Therefore I add a small hexagon socket head screw (Innensechskant) M4x10 mm to clamp the calliper gauge (Tiefenmesser).

DIY Nerf-saber #3DThursday #3DPrinting

Geldarr shares:

I designed these different handles in TinkerCad to make some homemade nerf-style “lightsabers” for the kids to smack each other with. They are sized to accept common 1/2″ PVC pipe through the handle. The endcaps should interchange between handles. The buttons should also interchange with any handle (except buttons v3 – that might only fit handle v3). After printing, superglue the button panel onto the handle. Button versions v2 & v3 accept hot-melt glue formed in the included button mold – make extras and cut to preferred size, then insert into the button holes.

Taduz shares:

This is a windchime with 8 wings, in shape of a ovation guitar.
It can be used as a normal windchime or with the middlecross an the backwing is it runable.
For turning an spinning I used a 22mmx8mm ball bearing for skateboards. They’re espescially designed for low friction.
As screws you can use what you have, I used stainless steel screws an nuts for rustprotection
I used threaded rod M8 as a connecting rod

I printed it in PLA from Eryone
