New Guide: How to Solder Headers – A Beginner’s Guide

How To Solder HeadersWe’ve got a new tutorial in the Learning System this week from Erin St. Blaine: how to solder headers. If you’ve been having fun with Gemma and Circuit Playground boards and are ready to level up to Adafruit’s Feather and FeatherWing lines with all their fancy features, this is a great place to start. This guide goes over proper soldering techniques for male, female, and stacking headers and also gives tips for de-soldering when things go wrong. From the guide:

Headers are like the duct tape of electronics. They’re great for connecting things together, soldering to perf-boards, or preparing boards for plug-in components like servos or sensors.

Using headers with your microcontroller can make your life much easier, but soldering them on can be a little intimidating to beginners. There are a lot of ways to get it wrong, and once a header is soldered onto a board it’s difficult or impossible to get it off again.

This guide will teach an easy and reliable way to attach your headers, with tips for getting them on straight and accurate, so you can move on with your project with confidence. It will also give advice about pitfalls to avoid, and what to do when you get them on wrong.

New Guide: Hallowing Flapping Bat with Spooky Eye #electronichalloween

We’ve got another great guide from Erin St. Blaine just in time for Halloween: Make a cardboard bat that flaps its wings and watches you with one spooky eye. This is a great beginner tutorial and is really fun to make with kids. If you can’t go trick-or-treating safely this year, why not stay in and get crafty with electronics?

The build is beginner-level, with no soldering required. Young makers will love decorating their bat wings and triggering the animatronic movement with capacitive touch. From the guide:

Make a spooky bat out of chipboard and decorate it with your best Halloween colors, sparkles, and ribbons. A little hot glue and crafting, and you’re ready to hang it above your door, where unwary passers-by will brush past and trigger your bats wings to flap up and down, scaring them out of their pants!

You don’t need a fancy motion sensor to trigger this halloween effect. The bat wings are triggered by a strand of conductive thread tied to the Hallowing’s onboard capacitive touch sensor. Anyone who comes in contact with the secret dangling thread will cause the bat to leap into motion.

The Hallowing board is the spookiest, creepiest, scariest microcontroller around. Its skull face and winking OLED eye are sure to frighten even the bravest of makers when you program it to go Bump in the Night.

New Guide: Sew a Halloween Costume Face Mask #halloween

Halloween is just around the corner. Everyone is a little anxious this year – with Covid 19 still threatening our neighborhoods and cities, we want to keep each other as safe as possible. But we all desperately need a little fun and connection, and Halloween really brings neighborhoods together.

So we’re happy to present this new tutorial from Erin St. Blaine: Sew a costume face mask over your real face mask, and keep those trick-or-treaters safe this year. This tutorial has three free downloadable sewing patterns to make an animal face or a spooky Plague Doctor mask, all of which can transform your look into something silly that will make the kids laugh when they come to your door. Or make one for your young trick-or-treater that will make her want to keep her mask on all night long.

Halloween is such a fun holiday, and traditionally includes mask-wearing to complete your costume. This year, face masks have been a daily fashion choice for many of us, so here’s a guide that focuses on making that face mask a little extra special for the spookiest day of the year.

Use colored felt to add a bird beak or monkey face to any face mask. Or create a “plague-doctor” style mask from

scratch to bring a bit of historical authenticity to your costume this year.

New Guide: Matrix Portal RGB Matrix Handbag

Everyone is going crazy for the new Matrix Portal microcontroller, a board that makes controlling any of Adafruit’s RGB Matrix Displays really easy. It’s a plug-and-play solution – just plug the board into the back of the display and start creating slideshows, animations, or internet connected applications. The possibilities are endless.

This new guide from Erin St. Blaine shows how to modify a messenger bag or backpack to display your RGB Matrix through a vinyl window in the bag. The sample code shows how to display a variety of different slide shows, and makes use of the Matrix Portal’s onboard accelerometer to darken the screen whenever you set the bag down for more than a minute, in order to save battery life.

From the guide:

Make a display for your display! Show off your message to the world. This guide will show how to set up and assemble a Matrix Portal and RGB Matrix display, then make a transparent pocket in your backpack, purse, or messenger bag to show it off.

There is also a simple code example that displays your bmp images in slideshow fashion. Use the onboard buttons to switch between folders and play different messages, or pause on your favorite image. Set your bag down and the onboard accelerometer will sense that you’re not moving and dim the screen to save battery life.

You can also use any of the other Matrix Portal code samples to get you started. Get ready to have fun with all the features the Matrix Portal offers.

A new guide today in the Adafruit Learning System: A Color Mixing QT Py Cuff Bracelet by Debra Ansell.

LED wearables let you change colors to match your outfit or your mood. This customizable cuff, made from simple craft materials, uses two LED strips which diffuse and mix their colors into hot glue “gems” to produce dynamic color gradients spanning the spectrum.

The small, versatile QT Py board can create complex color patterns with simple CircuitPython code, and the bracelet itself is a surprisingly straightforward build – using tools no more complex than a hot glue gun and soldering iron.

New Guide: Rainbow Fairy Light Bottle Lamp for Ada Lovelace Day

Check out the newest tutorial from Erin St. Blaine – just in time for Ada Lovelace Day! Make a lovely glowing bottle lamp with a Circuit Playground Express and a strand of warm white fairy lights. Choose colors or light animations using Microsoft MakeCode, and decorate with your favorite stickers.

This is a perfect first project for kids who are interested in learning to make things light up. It’s easy enough for kids as young as 8 or 9 to make by themselves, and younger kids will love to help out, choosing colors and animations and stickers.

This kit was designed for the Autumn Lights Festival, a fundraiser in Oakland, CA for Lake Merritt Gardens — the garden that inspired the game Pokemon Go! The festival is on October 16-18, 2020, and will be taking place online, so anyone with an internet connection can attend. There will be lots of wonderful featured artists (including Adafruit’s own Erin St. Blaine) showing off their LED and glowing artwork. Adafruit is one of the festival’s sponsors and is proud to offer this kit as a reward for donations to help keep the garden open and free to visitors year round. We’re hoping it will inspire a lot of young makers to create their own glowing artwork.

Make a beautiful rainbow colored glowing bottle lamp with fairy lights inside. You don’t need to catch actual fairies, or chase down a real rainbow, but it will look as though you did! Decorate it with your favorite stickers and place it on your windowsill, and I guarantee you it will attract both rainbows and fairies into your life.

We decorated ours with an Ada Lovelace sticker. Ada Lovelace is famous for being the world’s first computer programmer – she wrote computer programs before computers even existed! I think she deserves to have some art made for her.

New Guide: Bluetooth Controlled Programmable Room Lights

Home automation is all the rage. We’ve got Alexa and Siri playing us music, remote controlled room blinds, bluetooth controlled thermostats and video doorbells. We live in the future!

Jump on the Home Automation bandwagon like the DIY master you are. This new tutorial from Erin St. Blaine will show you how to assemble, install, and custom program a strip of NeoPixel lights in your home or RV, and control them with Adafruit’s BlueFruit app on your smartphone or tablet. This solution is more affordable and much more customizable than other commercially available products. Most bluetooth controllable light strips are not “addressable,” meaning the strip can show all the colors but only as a unit. You can’t always make animated rainbows or torchlight flickers, or starry night skies with comets going by. This guide will show you how to do all that, at a price that’s less than you’d pay for name brand solutions.

Install a strip of NeoPixel lights in your bedroom or living space. Hook them up to a Circuit Playground Bluefruit and control the lights with your phone or tablet. You can add as many different animation modes as you like – it’s really easy to do with Adafruit’s CircuitPython LED Animations Library.

Choose from millions of colors with our graphical color picker. And the library includes around a dozen pre-written animations that you can customize to your heart’s content including Rainbow, Pulse, Sparkle Pulse, Color Chase, Comet, and more. Within each animation you can set custom colors, speeds, directions and brightness. You can even layer the animations over one another to create your own custom animated lighting scenes.

Cycle through modes and fine-tune your brightness levels using Adafruit’s free BlueFruit app, which works seamlessly with our CircuitPython sample code.

Adafruit MatrixPortal makes it easy to create a custom LED sign #RBG

Using the plug-in MatrixPortal board we just released last week, we were able to make a sign that we brought to the Ruth Bader Ginsburg memorial vigil in NYC. The code displays three initials and then scrolls through an image of the Justice. We used the matrix magnetic feet to temporarily attach it to PT’s bag, it was solid but easy to remove at the end of the night – video

New Guide: Glowing Wire Wrap Necklace Tutorial – Programmable with USB Charging

Get inspired with the latest tutorial from the magical workshop of Erin St Blaine: how to make an LED necklace insert that’s small, light, and compact with a USB-rechargeable battery and up to 23 addressable NeoPixels — all within a very low profile, 2″ wide package. Combined with a colorful resin “stone” and a gorgeous wire wrapped setting, this necklace would make a stunning addition to your cosplay (it looks like a magical amulet!) or can be classy enough to wear on the red carpet with a fancy evening dress. It’s versatile enough to slip into a top hat or belt buckle too, and we think it would also work for Iron Man or Steven Universe with a few mods.

From the guide:

Sometimes you want to add animated lights to your costume or project and you’re really limited on space. Necklaces are a great example of this – a glowing pendant can be so striking, but if it’s too big and bulky it can cross the line to “gaudy” pretty quickly.

This tutorial aims to make the smallest possible NeoPixel module or insert for your project. We’ve worked to make it super small, at around 1/2″ thick and about 2″ across.

This tiny package still contains all the niceties:

  • 7-12 addressable NeoPixel lights
  • A compact on/off switch
  • A rechargeable battery with 4+ hours of battery life
  • Onboard USB charging capability

We’re using an ItsyBitsy M0 microcontroller, which can be programmed with CircuitPython, MakeCode or Arduino, so you’ve got lots of options, and we’ve included an easy-to-customize code sample as well.

NEW GUIDE: CLUE Rock, Paper, Scissors Game using Bluetooth #CLUE #CircuitPython #CircuitPythonDay

A new guide in the Adafruit Learning System today: CLUE Rock, Paper, Scissors Game using Bluetooth by Kevin Walters

This project features three versions of a rock, paper, scissors game in CircuitPython. The first is a very simple, single-player text game showing the basic logic of the game. The second is a two-player game using Bluetooth Low Energy advertising to exchange the players’ choices.

The third is a multi-player game building on the foundation of the second version, adding displayio graphics and sound. It has been tested with six players and potentially can work with far more.

The programs are written in CircuitPython for version 5.3.0 or later. The code runs on the CLUE and the Circuit Playground Bluefruit (CPB) with TFT (LCD) Gizmo screen. The third version of the game can also be used on just a CPB with the NeoPixels for output.

New Guide: Minecraft Inspired Epoxy Resin Torch Lamp with Touch Control

Check out the newest project tutorial from Erin St. Blaine: make an epoxy resin Minecraft-inspired torch lamp. This lamp has a strand of warm white fairy lights embedded right into the resin, making a lovely starry glow effect. Adding a Circuit Playground Express underneath powers up the lamp with 10 programmable NeoPixel LEDs. The included MakeCode downloadable code makes the lamp flicker like a torch for a really beautiful ambient lighting effect.

From the guide:

Make your own custom Minecraft-inspired Torch lamp from epoxy resin. Embed a strand of fairy lights inside, and set it on top of a Circuit Playground Express. The onboard NeoPixel lights provide a lovely, flickery torch effect. This gorgeous lamp glows from the inside out.

Add a piece of shiny copper tape to the base, and you can change light modes with a touch of your finger. Capacitive touch control is just like magic!

We’ve provided a simple 3d printable base model, or you can get creative and design your own display mount. We made ours look like Viking Dragon Ships to go with our Dragon Wall Sconce, and now we sail into sleep at night with fiery dragonish gargoyles watching over us.

New Guide: Ocean Resin Lightbox Image Scroller with RGB Matrix

We love this new tutorial from Erin St Blaine. She uses epoxy resin to make a beautiful beach scene that sits on a shadow box style picture frame. Inside the box is a Feather M4 Express microcontroller attached to an RGB matrix. The CircuitPython code scrolls images across the matrix, creating a magical bioluminescence effect behind the resin “waves”.

This is a really unique piece of art and looks like it’s a lot of fun to make. From the guide:

Explore the depths of your own personal ocean. Epoxy resin, alcohol inks, sand, and seashells come together to make a magical luminous ocean experience for your wall or desk. Each piece you create will come out unique, colorful, and beautiful.

The electronics assembly is pretty simple – the only soldering you’ll need to do is stacking and assembling the Feather and FeatherWing. The LED matrix plugs into the FeatherWing and into the wall using connectors, so doesn’t need to be soldered at all.

Epoxy resin is tricky by nature. Temperature, humidity, and dust need to be managed with any resin project. However, as resin projects go, I’ve found this to be about the easiest one I’ve ever done — and also the hardest to mess up. Stray bubbles or dust motes in your resin actually add depth and interest to this particular project – more bubbles make the ocean waves look more realistic! And as you’ll see, mixing and pouring all the pretty colors is incredibly satisfying.

The software and coding requires a little bit of setup if you haven’t used CircuitPython before. Once you’re set up, you can copy and paste our code and images or dig in and customize with your own artwork.

This project uses a Feather M4 and Trinamic’s TMC-2226 stepper motor driver to enable you to take long exposures of the night sky with just about any camera. This project was designed to be a more economical project vs. commercial equatorial mount trackers. And it can easily (and cheaply) be modified and customized, a feature many other trackers lack.

Every Thursday is #3dthursday here at Adafruit! The DIY 3D printing community has passion and dedication for making solid objects from digital models.
