This Smartwatch Can Help Detect Seizures in Kids

A newly FDA-cleared smartwatch is part of a growing field of technologies aimed at detecting and even predicting seizures. The watch, called Embrace, detects the movements and electrical pulses in the skin associated with seizures for many people. When it suspects a seizure, it sends an alert to a caregiver’s cell phone, along with GPS data so the wearer can easily be found. It also stores data and analyzes sleep and activity patterns, which could help patients and their doctors better understand when and why a seizure might happen on any given day. The watch was cleared for adults by the FDA early last year; now it’s been cleared for children too.

Glue Stick Light Pipe Sculpture : For this project we will create a “fiber optic” rainbow archway using glue sticks and a NeoPixel LED dot strand. The NeoPixels hidden beneath the glue sticks guide the light in a curved path away from the LEDs. Because each glue stick connects two different NeoPixels, they are able to mix colors in the center, allowing tons of different color combinations to be achieved.

Computer Simulations Show How Plasma Jets Escape Black Holes

Researchers used one of the world’s most powerful supercomputers to better understand how jets of high energy plasma escapes the intense gravity of a black hole, which swallows everything else in its path—including light.

Before stars and other matter cross a black hole’s point of no return—a boundary known as the “event horizon”—and get consumed by the black hole, they get swept up in the black hole’s rotation. A question that has vexed physicists for decades was how some energy managed to escape the process and get channeled into streams of plasma that travel through space near the speed of light.

It uses a passive infrared (PIR) sensor—described here among other microcontroller sensing options—to detect motion, then an opto-isolator to connect the ground and trigger pins. No other active components are needed!

Scientists Model How Prehistoric Shark Cut Through Prey With ‘Scissor Jaws’

Paleontologists have known about Edestus for over 150 years. Fossils of the fish were found in the roughly 330-million-year-old shale of the United States and England, most of them with preserved teeth and parts of the jaw. Since Edestus’ discovery in the 19th century, its jaws have stymied experts looking to understand the feeding habits of this unusual fish. Edestus’ two rows of teeth aren’t arranged in a half circle, as in most modern sharks, but rather look like a pair of toothy pinking shears. Nothing like Edestus exists today, but a new analysis of a delicate fossil has solved the mystery of how this ancient marine predator consumed its prey.
