Instructables user ryanthedude goes big with costumes — you could even say he goes jurassic. One of his recent wheelchair costume designs focuses on the Indominus Rex from Jurassic World. It’s constructed to fit around the mobility device and work/move with it. The dinosaur is definitely on a larger scale, but Ryan broke it down on Instructables. He started by carving a 3D sculpt for patterns.
He says:
Our sculpt here was carved out of a block upholstery foam. You get your patterns by laying fabric over your sculpt creating folds aka darts in the fabric so it lays flat on your sculpt. Similar to what seamstresses do in sewing patterns. Carving was done with carving knife, razor blades and a dremel sanding pad. Next cut out the patterns and glue. We used L200, a closed cell foam. Glue with contact cement and BAAAM!!! An Indominus head, well the start of one!
He added a thin upholstery foam to serve as the skin they could carve details, like all the pebbly dino skin, into. See a couple of in-progress photos below.
