The GNK power droid, a.k.a. Gonk, was introduced in the original Star Wars trilogy and appears in the video game Star Wars Battlefront. Gerardo Arellano and his son Michael decided to make a Halloween costume inspired by the Gonk droid they spotted in the game for Michael. Arellano used affordable, easy to find items to craft the droid. Two storage containers made up the bulk of the droid’s “body” and he added “a baking pan, metal screen for cleaning paint rollers, grommets and calculator keys” from the dollar store. It’s resourceful, and the results look good.
Geek & Sundry reports Arellano got creative with the weathering process:
The weathered look of the droid was created by spraying diluted house paint, and even soy sauce and maple syrup were added to create the effect of hydraulic fluid leaking from a faux bad gasket.
