How to Make Simple Wings With Fire and Ice Tech #WearableWednesday #wearabletech #Arduino #art

Fire and Ice Tech Wings

It has been a while since I’ve seen some wings and luckily mega maker Caitlin’s Dad has come to the rescue. According to his Instuctable, these Fire and Ice Wings get their humble start from cardboard and take off with recycled parts from a previous project—the Hunger Games Neopixel Fire Thermometer Scarf. So, that means you can expect to see an Adafruit FLORA Microcontroller and lots of NeoPixel LED strips. Caitlin’s Dad wanted to experiment further with using the FastLED library Fire sketch and has this pro tip.

To save on processing used to generate the Fire matrix, it was easier to mirror the strips on each wing by wiring up two or three strips together to the same data pin. The strips were interspersed between each other when mounted to add to the overall random flame effect.

LED strips take multiple wires, and Caitlin’s Dad wrangles these nicely by introducing a perfboard. He also makes sure to label the bundles to make programming clear. Of course the best is seeing the finished results and the maker admits that he had some fun playing with color palettes on FastLED.

Of course these wings are just a jumping off point and you can certainly get snazzy with some heavy duty materials for the wings. You can also customize them with your own special sauce of programming and sensors.

Program it with custom color palettes to any color gradient you desire. Mod your light up wings to be sound reactive, motion, heartbeat, muscle or brain wave responsive, bluetooth IoT controlled, etc, etc.

If you are interested in creating your own costume wings, make sure you check out our NeoPixel Überguide which is filled with information, from the different forms of pixels to programming tips and power choices. You can even invent your own angel halo with our large NeoPixel ring. Just make sure you send pics of your fly wings so we can sing your praises!
