Inspiring story from the Stamford (Connecticut) Advocate on former NYC resident and ‘art mechanic’ Steve Gerberich (above, center) and his Gerb-O-Matic Workshop of classes and robot-making:
Stephen Gerberich came to the urban jungle of New York City from his rural roots in Iowa in 1985 with a portfolio of photographs under his arm. He was determined to open his own gallery.
Life had other plans.
Gerberich soon discovered that was harder said than done. He attended the University of Northern Iowa where he studied photography. His life led him to a career in the field up to that point, but when it didn’t pan out the way he envisioned, Gerberich fell back on another skill.
He created sculptures from everyday items to photograph — from natural items like twigs to man-made objects like suitcases — but the emphasis was always on the photography. After moving to New York, that shifted.
