Adafruit was deemed an essential service to distribute/make some PPE (Personal Protection Equipment) such as face shields, and manufacturer electronics for essential life-saving/preserving equipment and developement which is needed in New York and beyond.

We are maintaining some, but not all, business operations to assist in providing these valuable services to combat the COVID-19 outbreak.

We are logistics and supply chain experts, we can get almost anything from around the world to us for distribution and/or assembly. We can also perform many electronics repairs and rework thanks to our collection of components, inventory, and hand-work equipment. We ship about 30,000 orders a month and will be able to get urgently needed electronics and PPE to NYC government entities for crisis relief. In addition to these efforts, we began work on hardware and software that can be used for workforce recovery and disease prevention.

After we were able to re-open in the limited capacity for essential services we immediately were able to ship, same-day, within 2 hours for components / electronics for ventilator support in addition to electronics for ongoing medical device efforts.

We are also working with NYC to explore disposable open-source low-cost face shields.
Listed below is Adafruit’s manufacturing equipment. We have the skills and workforce to help combat this crisis in any way we can be helpful. ASYS LSB-03 Board Loader – The board loader can be thought of as an automated staging area for printed circuit boards (PCB’s). Each board that we make at Adafruit is taken first from this machine and into the stencil printer where it receives solder paste.

Speedline MPM Momentum Elite Stencil Printer – This machine accurately deposits solder paste onto the relevant sites (“pads”) using two opposing metal blades that squeegee the paste through the necessary cut-outs of a stainless steel stencil positioned over the blank PCB.

Samsung SM-481 “Pick-and Place” – Pick and place machines (aka PnP’s) PICK individual SMT (surface mount) components up from “feeders” and then PLACE those components onto pre-programmed sites on the awaiting PCB. This particular pick-and-place has ten nozzles with which to pick and then place parts and is referred to as a “chip shooter” because of the speed with which it can place or “shoot” them onto the board.
Samsung SM-482 “Pick-and-Place” – Our second pick-and-place machine on our production line is very similar to the other machine aside from two key differences. Unlike the SM481, this machine has only 6 nozzles with which to pick and place parts. It also has a different computer vision system than our other machine. The reason for these differences is because this machine is used mainly to place larger components such as connectors, buttons, IC’s, and a variety of jacks. Due to these differences this machine is referred to as a “chip placer”.

Samsung WT200 LE Inspection Conveyor – Fully populated PCB’s exit the SM482 and slide along the tracks of the inspection conveyor. This machine is a handy tool that allows us to inspect each board before it goes into our oven for reflowing.

TSM A70-J82 Reflow Oven – Once a board has been inspected we send it into the oven to be reflowed -this is the process by which the electrical connections are made. The board is carried along a track as it travels through the oven’s 8 different heating chambers and final two cooling chambers. The speed with which it moves through the oven can be controlled via the attached computer screen. Boards appear as blue squares on the system’s screen once they are seen by the sensor at the mouth of the machine.

Nordson Select KISS-102 selective soldering machine – Hand soldering large batches of thru-hole components can be a time consuming task. In order to cut down on the amount of time needed to complete soldering operations we generally process boards through this machine which allows us to automate the soldering process with precision. Solder joints produced through this process are far more uniform in nature than when done by hand.

Onsite Gas N-30 PSA Nitrogen generator – Our selective solder machine uses nitrogen as a shielding gas to aid in the creation of high-quality solder joints. This machine uses a pressure swing adsorption system (PSA) to generate 99.999% pure nitrogen by separating nitrogen molecules from oxygen molecules. Science for the win!

Sharp’s SX™ Continuous Roll Bagging System – Our auto-bagger dramatically increases the rate at which we’re able to package products. This machine uses a blast of air to hold the bag open to receive the product, then automatically seals the bag closed and feeds a new one forward.

Epilog Mini 24 Laser – We love our Epilog laser. The raster and vector modes allow us some versatility in our patterning and at 60 watts we can cut through some surprisingly beefy material. A machine as great for making kittable products as it is for prototyping.

3D Printer – Our 3D printing setup pairs nicely with our laser cutter. The design and construction of this machine provides added rigidity and stability to a process that is so reliant upon it for good prints. We very often design and print components completely in-house for our prototyping needs-from testers for products to 3D printed jigs for production and workholding.
