Stackable Toilet Paper Dispenser V2 #3DThursday #3DPrinting

OspreyGozo shares:

This is an upgrade over my older model https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3136805

This one is sturdier, uses dovetail joints and, depending on your printer’s calibration, might not need glue for the parts to fit together. If you really need to use glue, super glue will do. The holder can be mounted to a wall using 3 screws.

The model is printed in parts to make it easier to print and to take advantage of orientation for strength. The parts are already oriented and have a chamfer at the bottom to counter elephant foot (which could make fitting the parts harder).

Raspberry Pi Pico Stair Lights #piday #raspberrypi @Raspberry_Pi

via Craig Richardson hackster.io

Back when life was simple and the only people wearing masks into shops were bandits or folk in fancy dress, I made an LED stair light project using a Raspberry Pi Zero. But in the three years since that time many things in the world have changed, most notably of all being the fact that the stair lights stopped working. First the SD card mysteriously became corrupted, then after acquiring a new one and installing the software and copying over the stair light code, I was able to get it working again.. for about a week. It was clear this wasn’t going to be a simple fix. I had two options, take the construction I had apart completely and try to figure out where it was going wrong or do something else. I decided to do something else.

Infinity Dodecahedron #piday #raspberrypi @Raspberry_Pi

What’s better than an infinity mirror? An infinity dodecahedron that displays energy data! From Sandro Wucherer on vimeo, translated with Google Translate:

We decided to develop an Infinity Dodecahedron – a semitransparent object that creates “infinite” reflections through controllable LEDs. The particular challenge here was the connection of the manual production with the hardware-based control by Arduino and Raspberry Pi. In addition, a dynamic website was designed and set up, which reads energy data from a database and visualizes it appropriately using diagrams and color coding.

Raspberry Training and RetroGaming Briefcase @Raspberry_Pi #PiDay #RaspberryPi

If Q from MI6 made a Raspberry Pi trainer, this would be it. It fits in a briefcase and it’s got all you need to learn Reaspberry Pi, engage in some retrogaming, and solder up some prototypes. Here’s more from Abel Rodriguez via Hackaday:

I’ve used an old briefcase to make a portable Raspberry trainer, to teach me Python and try to teach my kid some Scratch. I’ve fitted 48 18650 cells to power all, it’s a little heavy but it last a lot of time, and also due I want to use a portable 24 iron solder. There are three power supplies, one buck-boost from the battery to 24V and two little ones to supply 5V to the LCD and the Raspberry. Also a battery monitor to know how much remains and the temperature. The raspberry hdmi is connected to a portable monitor of 13 inches, it’s an IPS screen and has a very good illumination, also it powers from a USB C with 5V 3A I’ve used an USB SSD to put all the roms for the Retropie, and it works perfectly. The iron solder is a SQ-001, that works with 24V ad heats up very fast. The raspberry GPIO connector is wired to a little protoboard that will help to connect some devices. A keyboard also is stored under the lid, were the batteries and power supplies are.

See project!

Delta Stand v2 – 3 Way Adjustable Stand #3DThursday #3DPrinting

MKingery shares:

There are 2 distances you can set the frame apart by depending on which connection piece you use. the single 160mm spacer is more than enough for most machines or tablets, or you can grab 2 100mm spacers and glue/screw them together with the m2m piece.
The cap piece can either tie the frame together from an un-used point using the “stand plug” piece OR can pass through a foot with the locking hole included. look at the picture to make more sense of it!

Tomoya Ikeda – Macintosh Artist #ArtTuesday @gingerbeardman

Tomoya Ikeda (池田友也) might not be a name you’re familiar with, but if you used a classic Macintosh computer at any time during in the 1990s you’re likely already familiar with some of his work. documents Ikeda’s work in a lovely post:

Tomoya Ikeda played a key part in the evolution of After Dark’s world famous Flying Toasters. The original prototype artwork was done by Jack Eastman, at which time Ikeda-san was brought in as a contractor to draw the final 1-bit artwork. Later versions of the toasters were drawn in colour by Igor Gasowski and eventually rendered and animated in 3D by Jarir Maani.

Maker Highlight: Anthony James Studio

JUNE2020 PRINTS 15

We recently came across the work of British artist Anthony James (based in LA) and we were totally blown away. His work is beautiful, technically impressive, and mesmerizing. Read more about the artist directly from his website. You can also check him out on vimeo and instagram.

James was born in England in 1974. He studied in London at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design and graduated with a degree in fine art painting. His work gestures towards the theatricality of minimalism and formalism. There is a focus on materiality, alchemy, and a deep respect for light and space.

2001 in the Style of Picasso, Rendered by AI #ArtTuesday

Is this how HAL got started? We’d be curious if a deep neural networks could, perhaps, transpose “Daisy, Daisy” in the style of Lil Nax X, maybe? Here’s more from Bhautik Joshi:

‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ rendered in the style of Picasso using deep neural network based style transfer. The cubist style had mixed results in the transfer; you can see that big empty blocks of colour didn’t map coherently between the frames. I’m working on a solution for that :]

A Mystery from a Future Wikipedia #ArtTuesday

Neurocracy is a game that plays out on an imagined wikipedia from a corporatized dystopian future. It’s low-fi browser based wikipedia science fiction with social commentary — and that’s very, very cyberpunk. Here’s more from Waypoint:

These murders are the central mysteries of Neurocracy, billed as both a “single-player alternate reality game” and an “epistolary hypertext novel.” It takes place entirely on Omnipedia, a fictional online encyclopedia, which you access via your own web browser. You’ll read through meticulously crafted entries structured like those of its real-world counterpart. The page of businessman Shaoyong, for example, includes sections on his “early life and education” as well as “personal life,” and both may contain clues as to the reasons behind his demise. But there are also entries on extreme weather events and even a deadly zoonotic disease which millions suffer from, all stitched together seamlessly via hyperlinks. The game’s website asks if you’ve ever lost yourself in a “Wikipedia rabbit hole,” and, well, Neurocracy nails this feeling perfectly.

The Urban Constructions of Cinta Vidal #ArtTuesday

The Upside-Down, however well-designed, wasn’t exactly the place where you might pull out an image for an art gallery. But Cinta Vidal brings an upside down to everyday life. Here’s more from JUXTAPOZ:

Multidisciplinary artist Cinta Vidal illustrates new perceptions of city landscapes by detaching and reimaging the architectural formations that function as the backdrops of life. For Vidal, depicting macro and micro levels of inverted apartment buildings and city structures illustrate the various ways the world is experienced by a mass population. Having grown up with an affinity for drawing, Vidal became an apprentice at Taller de’Escenografia Castells Planas, one of the most prestigious scenography ateliers in Spain and across Europe. There, she learned the trades of scenography, painting large-scale scenes and settings for theatre and opera backdrops. Utilizing this experience, Vidal uses acrylic paint on canvas to create what she describes as her “un-gravity constructions.” She paints each artwork with close attention to detail, fully realizing each structure and the unfolding scenes within. Vidal’s combination of saturation, detail, and balance work together to allow the viewer’s gaze to absorb these various and often intersecting viewpoints.

Found: A 7,500-Year-Old Cave Painting of Humans Gathering Honey

Cave painting

Sweet bit of history from Gastro Obscura.

Manuel Bea, a researcher from the University of Zaragoza, authenticated the painting alongside colleagues Inés Domingo and Jorge Angás. “We have a perfect photograph,” he explains, that provides insight into just how these practices were conducted: by climbing ropes. The Barranco Gómez rock shelter was found by a nearby resident in 2013, but the analysis of the painting published just this year.

Magic 2 Ball #piday #raspberrypi @Raspberry_Pi

via BitstoArt on instructables

In the long tradition of fortune telling Magic 8 Balls I created a self-contained Magic 2 Ball running a Raspberry Pi Zero 2. When you shake the ball and turn it over, the answer tile is displayed on a round screen and the answer is spoken out loud. The 110mm diameter ball is 3D printed in three parts. The round color LCD screen has a 240 x 240 pixels resolution. The sound is high quality PCM and the ball’s orientation is read by a circuit board. The python programs and resources are maintained through a WIFI connection and additional answers can be added.

I had a full spool of dark blue 3D filament, so instead of an eight ball, mine is a Magic 2 Ball to match the color of the two pool ball. This project requires a steady hand and good vision for soldering the connections.

Detecting Bats Raspberry Pi @Raspberry_Pi #PiDay #RaspberryPi

In the UK roosting bats are protected, and syrveys are required eo ensure that no protected animals are in any given residence. Bats, of course, are hard to spot — just ask anyone who lives in Gotham. Tegwyn Twmffat has put together relatively inexpensive way to find those mammalian flyers. Here’s more from the Design Spark:

Although auto-classification of bats had been done before, I thought it would be fun to have a go myself. After a few false starts and some communication on this, particularly friendly, Facebook group: Bat Call Sound Analysis Workshop I settled on a solution using Random Forest and a set of feature extraction algorithms from Bioacoustics. After following the Bioacoustics tutorial I managed to get some basic training and deployment scripts up and running in the R language, despite never having used it before. I did, however, have to go back more recently and work out how to use it properly to create .csv files for producing into graphs!

Finding data for the classifier was not as easy as we might expect. In theory, there should exist a number of ‘citizen science’ databases crammed full of audio recordings of the bats of the UK and northern Europe, but, for some reason, they’ve all been made inaccessible to the general public. Fortunately, I found 6 species in my back yard and, with the help of a few other enthusiasts, I cobbled together a data-set of 9 of the 17 species found in the UK for testing. I also added recordings of rattling my own house keys to help test the system when no bats were available.
