ArduCam AutoFocus Skeletal Cover #3DPrinting #3DThursday

SerenityRanch shares:

The ArduCam Auto Focus Camera, based on the standard “Pi Cam 2”, needs clearance around the front of the lens/board for the Auto Focus Light and Sensors to work properly. I simply cut out the parts of “Stingr’s” Remixed Pi Cam Cover so that the ArduCam’s front sensors aren’t blocked.

Users are installing Windows 11 on Raspberry Pi #RaspberryPi #Windows11

In the last day, the interwebs are filling up with reports and videos of users installing Windows 11 preview builds on various non-PC hardware. This is a bit ironic in that the hardware requirements for PCs are quite high – a very modern processor with a trusted platform module (TPM).

Since Microsoft has released an official ARM64 build of Windows 11, it’s not too surprising to see it get ported to the Raspberry Pi 4 or the old Microsoft Lumia 950 XL phone. It’s cool to see users jumping through the hoops to actually make it work.

The non-detailed instructions for doing this are (untested):

How to install Windows 11 to Raspberry Pi 4: do everything the way you would if you were setting up Windows 10 on ARM, but use the Windows 11 ARM64 image instead. Also, use GPT and not MBR since it didn’t work when I tried it (but it could’ve just been by change it didn’t work).

The build appears to be 10.0.22000.51, which is not the version leaked prior to the Win11 announcement. Overclocking is not possible.

For those curious on how this is being done, see the following sites documenting this is possible. Expect additional, more detailed tutorials on the internet shortly and it’ll be interesting to see what Microsoft does.

TAICCA Features Taiwanese Illustrations at the 2021 Bologna Children’s Book Fair #ArtTuesday

Promoting the lineup at the 2021 Bologna Children’s Book Fair (BCBF), the Taiwan Creative Content Agency (TAICCA) curated the virtual Taiwan Pavilion featuring Taiwanese artists in partnership with Taiwan’s Animation and Visual Effects Association.

via Juxtapoz

The Taiwan Pavilion will feature the ten animations adapted from BCBF official selection, Golden Tripod Awards and Golden Comic Awards winners, works from the

Books from Taiwan Initiative (BFT), as well as illustrations and children’s books in Hakka and Taiwanese languages, along with 12 award-winning illustrators.

To further promote Taiwan’s wonderful illustrations, the Taiwan Pavilion also features the online illustration exhibition “HOME TOWN TAIWAN,” organized by the Taipei Illustration Fair, Ministry of Culture Taiwan Academy in Houston, and Auspicious Design. The exhibition showcases ten Taiwanese illustrators’ 59 works inspired by their lives in Taiwan.

In addition, since the last year’s BCBF was canceled due to the pandemic, six Taiwanese creators were unable to accept their awards in person. Thus, the Taipei Book Fair Foundation also plans a special exhibition for these works on this year’s Taiwan Pavilion.

Black Movement Library: Movement Portraits #ArtTuesday

BML Performance horizontal lockup 1024x415

Last week attendees outside the Brooklyn Library were treated to a multimedia dance experience. Dancers outfitted with sensors were live captured. Their movements were mirrored by CGI figures and imagery being projected onto the front of the building.

Taking the form of multiple short acts, the evening will feature both live and prerecorded “Movement Portraits,” or 2D video representations of peoples’ movements created using perception neuron motion-capture suits. Artists Roobi Gaskins, Renaldo Maurice, Ntu, Roukijah Rooks, and RaFia Santana will create their “Movement Portraits” live in front of the audience, dancing on the plaza in front of the Library and sending their movement data to be translated into projected visuals in real-time. The evening will also include pre-recorded videos of “Movement Portraits” created by participants in the workshop series earlier this year. During the intermission, the audience will have the opportunity to participate in the creation and archiving of movements collaboratively through sharing their own movements to be projected.

Technology, Biology, and Music in the Art of Yen Tzu Chang

Yen Tzu Chang’s performances involve a dizzying combination of biological design and lighting effects. Their work exemplifies Sci Art. Here’s more from Art the Science:

[The term SciArt] seems to declare that you don’t need to treat art and science as opposing disciplines…new terms are proposed to tell everyone that they should be divided independently. However, SciArt is more like encouraging everyone to bravely explore new areas. People with a scientific background can try to make creations, while those with an art background can learn science and apply it to their art practice. It seems to declare that you don’t need to treat art and science as opposing disciplines. Just boldly try to work on art and science together!

Retro Gaming Face-Off: Raspberry Pi vs PC vs Retro Minis #piday #raspberrypi @Raspberry_Pi

MdTmXVnaWev4C2pS9eFppY 970 80

I have heard people say that all these new mini-consoles are just glorified pis with bigger price tags. Is it true though? How do they stack up. Tom’s Hardware has this super in depth comparison for the best retro playing experience.

Whether you have fond memories of playing Banjo-Kazooie on the Nintendo 64 as a kid or are just curious about what it was like to use dusty, old 8-bit consoles from before you were born, there are many reasons to play games from retro consoles. And because of the exploding popularity of retro gaming, there are now four main ways to play. You can use emulation software that runs on a modern PC, use a different set of emulators on a Raspberry Pi, get your hands on a retro console mini like the NES Classic Edition or, if you can find one in good condition, buy an original console and cartridges / discs.

But just what is the best option for playing retro games? To find out, we compared these retro gaming platforms based on five key criteria: cost, game selection, controls, performance and accuracy, and overall play experience. Let’s see how well they stack up against each other.

elementary OS on Raspberry Pi #piday #raspberrypi @Raspberry_Pi

via Cassidy James Blaede

Following our efforts to bring elementary OS to the ARM-based Pinebook Pro, we’ve added experimental builds for the ARM-based Raspberry Pi 4 series—including the recently-launched Raspberry Pi 400—to our Early Access program. Like Pinebook Pro builds, Raspberry Pi support is considered an experiment and is not something we have committed to officially support indefinitely. However, if you’re one of the many folks with a Raspberry Pi 4 sitting around and wanted to see how a full, modern desktop operating system runs, elementary OS is now an option!

Using a thermal printer on your Raspberry Pi #PiDay #RaspberryPi @Raspberry_Pi

James Gallagher posts about a handy project using a Raspberry Pi and an Adafruit Thermal Printer:

A few days ago, I decided to purchase the Adafruit Thermal Printer, which was compatible with the Raspberry Pi. This thermal printer has been on my mind for a while but this week a reason for buying one came to mind (aside from the fun of experimenting with a thermal printer which was obvious to me). I decided that I wanted to generate a random Aeropress recipe that I could then print.

James branches out on what the printer does in subsequent posts:

I want to create a daily update for myself that is printed out. My goal is for this update to be printed out every day before I wake up, perhaps at 6am. The update will be scheduled using cron, which will run a specific program at 6am or whenever I decide the update should be printed. The code for the printer will be kept on my Raspberry Pi so that I can have my printer running 24/7.

The logic for the new RSS module is as follows:

  1. Print message informing me the next section of the daily update will show my RSS feeds.
  2. Get articles in my main feed from Feedly.
  3. Iterate over each article and check if it was published yesterday.
  4. If an article was published yesterday, the title and URL of the article should be printed to the console.
  5. Otherwise, nothing should happen.

Check out the details in the blog post starting with this one here.

Voice Controlled 3D Printer @Raspberry_Pi #PiDay #RaspberryPi

Here’s a handy project from Samira Peiris via hackster.io:

I hate using the control panel of my 3D printer to tweak its settings. Sometimes when I need to preheat the hotend or the bed, I have to navigate through a bunch of menus using an encoder that is too outdated in this age of voice control and AI.

iPhone Remote-Controlled 3D-Printed Jeep @Raspberry_Pi #PiDay #RaspberryPi

RC cars are the best. With an RC car you can ride pell mell, do crazy tricks, and run through the mud without any danger of injury or mess.  Here’s a great Raspberry PI RC car project from jim Myracle via hackster.io:

After viewing the plans for a 3D-printed Jeep Rancher on the 3DSets.com website I decided it would be a perfect project for my grandson and I (but really for me). The.stl files and instructions supplied by 3DSets.com are near perfect particularly for original Prusa printers and a real value at $30.00.

I don’t know a thing about RC (radio controlled) gear. It’s a hobby I have never explored. As I investigated the requirements for RC controller for this project I got intimidated by the wide assortment of transmitters, receivers, esc’s (electronic speed controllers) and motors involved in RC. I also don’t have a group of RC knowledgeable people around that I could rely on for advice.

Minimalistic craft knife handle #3DPrinting #3DThursday

Minimalistic craft knife handle by BleenPaper Thingiverse

BleenPaper shared this project on Thingiverse!

I had some craft knife blades lying around and I was missing a handle for a small amount of cutting I needed to do. So I designed this minimalist craft knife handle that allows for a decently good grip.

It’s probably necessary to print this with a few lines of brim (full raft not required), otherwise the tip will cause problems.

After inserting the blade, you can press the two parts together by hand or with pliers. They hold together quite well, but can also be seperated again quite easily.

New Version V2: The blade is much sturdier, but you may have to do a little more cleanup.

Pliers Drawer Organizer #3DThursday #3DPrinting

Pliers

If you have a plier for every job don’t you want a home for every plier?

From DadHacks on Thingiverse:

I found a few other plier holders on here but wanted to design one to fit my Husky Toolbox as well as trying to use as little filament as possible while printing as quick as possible. I currently print these with 0.6mm nozzle, 0.4 layer height and 100mm/s. Looks good enough to use in my toolbox. But these can still be printed well with standard settings which I will post below. I have posted a 10 piece and 6 piece model for smaller beds, also a “wide” version of each for those with wider pliers. All the silver ones in my sample picture were printed in “standard” size for comparison. This can be scaled up or down as well depending on your size pliers and drawer.
