This is a very fascinating video from Trent of the YouTube gaming channel, Miscast. Trent is working on a tabletop RPG called Arcane Ugly. He’s not super confident in his artistic abilities, but he wanted a game book that was very art-intensive.
To achieve a beautiful look for his book, with lots of illustrations, many of them done by him, he decided to create a series of design constraints that worked to his advantage (e.g. exclusively bold black and white art). He also leaned into a consistent style that also served his limitations.
In the video, Trent not only runs through the constraints he developed, but he also shows you how he goes about creating the work.
