Makers of over 1/2 million world-class pianos, this video is a great tour of the Steinway & Sons factory of today, as narrated by former chairman John Steinway. He passed away in 1989, but recorded this narration years earlier; the techniques & tools are so tried & true that they have not changed since and are not likely to change anytime soon. Their Queens, NYC factory is still to this day located at the northern edge of Long Island City (the surrounding neighborhood is named after their location); while tours and site visits are not available you can see – and hear – the fruits of their labor at the Steinway Hall showroom located on 6th Avenue between West 43rd and 44th Streets in Midtown, Manhattan. Whenever I am near there I always like to swing by and gawk at the beauty of these hand-crafted instruments, each one approximately a year in the making.
