I remember seeing this curious posting on Facebook from designer Maartje Dijkstra:
Looking for a pro female high fashion model, based in Berlin, that is up for a big fashion performance half of December…dealing with flying objects.
Well, it is all making sense now as she has just placed third in FashionFusion Berlin with her TranSwarm Entities dress. It’s a 3D printed beauty, with hidden drones ready to swarm.
The dress capitalizes on Maartje’s 3D printing style, which includes manually forming the web-like threads that bring a skeletal look. In fact, she created a “Black Drone Bird” motif for the dress, where the drones appear adorned. The boots also reflect the design and were 3D printed at FabLab Berlin.
Like most of Maartje’s fashion happenings, the dress includes electronic music and projection. The music and programming were done by Newk, who has also collaborated with the designer on other works. This full media integration is something that I find very Berlin-esque and really elevates the excitement by including a team of artists. I think the American fashion industry could certainly do more in this regard. So, thanks, Maartje, Newk and the rest of the creative team for continuing an exciting perspective on what it means to be part of humanity and tech. Wishing you a great new year in the 3D wilderness.
