How to Make Costume Wings from Felt

Bubblefish, one half of the Skyfish Cosplay duo, recently had to come up with some wings for a costume and used felt. I’ve seen wings made from faux feathers, paper, craft foam, and even plastic, but I think this is the first time I’ve come across this technique. I like the look of the finished wings; the felt makes them look a little like clouds. Bubblefish said the technique is simple but time-consuming.

She started by drawing one of the wings on paper and sketching in the feathers. She then used white hobby felt to craft the feathers. Bubblefish made over 600 felt feathers in total to cover the front and back of both wings. She made cardboard templates to help feather-making go faster. After cutting the feathers out of felt, she coated them with Mod Podge so they would retain their shape. Then it was all about carefully applying the feathers.
