Building a “life size” (slightly smaller than the show) Star Trek TNG style warp core with the help of my dad. The dilithium chamber will feature a drawer to house my home server, NAS, battery backup, and peripherals. It will also feature lights and sounds true to the show with variable speed and patterns. There are also a few alternate lighting color schemes like Patriotic, Christmas, and room for more.
The main controls are currently a pair of knobs attached to a separate control box but I have future plans to allow it to receive updates via ethernet to update the display state based on other home automation inputs (e.g. make warp speed proportional to home server cpu load, etc.)
The audio is driven by a RaspberryPi which communicates over serial to an Arduino Mega to run the lights. The structure was built out of MDF plywood with the rings being vacuum formed plastic in an oven. The bulk of the physical construction was done by my dad while I handled design direction and the electronic side.
