Tracking Icebergs in the Canadian Arctic with #Adafruit Products @wirlcarleton @adamgarbo @adafruit

Did you know that Adafruit materials are currently helping to track the location of six icebergs in the Canadian Arctic?

We received a message from Adam Garbo recently:

I just wanted to share a little bit about a project that I’ve been working on. My name’s Adam and I’m from Carleton University, in Ottawa, Canada. For over the past year, I’ve been working on developing a low-cost, open-source iceberg tracking beacon that is based almost entirely on Adafruit components.

This past summer, while conducting research onboard a Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker, I was able to execute six successful helicopter deployments of beacons on icebergs throughout the Canadian Arctic. The beacons are recording their location and other sensor data at hourly intervals and then transmitting it via a RockBLOCK Iridium satellite modem.

The data can be viewed in real-time at the website: http://cryologger.org My project was also featured by Rock Seven, the company that makes the RockBLOCK modem, on their blog.

The first version of the beacon was based on the Adafruit Pro Trinket 3V, but Adam is now in the process of moving over to the Adafruit Feather ecosystem for the next design iteration.
