Liam Scott has created an elegant gauntlet perfect for LARP adventures that involve flames springing from hands. He created this piece for the Wearable Technology class at the School of Design, Victoria University of Wellington (which frequently does fabulous work). Here’s his description:
“Vulcan” is a wearable technology gauntlet that produces an artificial flame effect when activated. Named after the Roman god of smithing and fire, this piece is a contemporary homage to ancient Roman gladiator armour and the elemental beauty of fire.
You have probably guessed that an Arduino microcontroller and LEDs are key components here, but there is a unique element responsible for the smoke effect—a hacked eCigarette device! The vapor adds just enough atmosphere for the random flicker of the LED lights, creating a warm glow. Of course there is the beautiful craftsmanship of the gauntlet as well, with its leather and brass-like armour. Liam mentions that his creation is well suited for theater, film and television. I’m hoping Liam is considering a career in costumes or special effects as this is a well constructed piece. Looks like I’ve found another contender for my my top ten list of wearables for the year.
