From little robots popping up out of little rocket ships to ‘bots assembled from disused landline phone components, Baxterbots is proof of concept: pretty much anything can be turned into a ‘bot with a bit of imagination!
The fun really starts when something catches my imagination and a vision of the piece comes to mind. That vision fuels my work but I let it stray and unfold from there. Its important to me that the initial vision acts more as an influence on the piece rather than a rigid blueprint. I like the bot to surprise me as I work and it comes alive. Crazy cool things happen when I give the process some breathing room. I am happiest when am lost in the doing of the work and not focused on the end result. An open, clear and still mind makes for a happy piece.
The core components I work with come from vintage items collected from everywhere I can find them – garage sales, online, auctions and flea markets. Life long fascinations with history, collecting, science fiction and pop culture tend to add influences to my work. Most pieces are assembled with cold fastening and I like to keep their interesting patinas in place. I take time and care to add some character or warmth to each piece so they can come alive and have a happy personality.
