Durin’s Box: a locked box opened with a password #LOTR #RaspberryPi @hackadayio

I’ve made a box for my son whose lid is locked with a couple of solenoids. A Pi Zero running word-recognition software is embedded in the lid. LEDs indicate when the microphone is active. When the software recognizes the spoken password the lid is unlocked.

The design on the lid is derived from Tolkien’s drawing of the door that leads into the Mines of Moria, which opens when one says “mellon,” the Elvish word for “friend.”

Raspberry Pi Zero runs phrase recognition software (PocketSphinx) and controls an Adafruit I2S microphone, NeoPixel LEDs and solenoids.

See the video below and more on Hackaday.io and Raspberry Pi News.

And the scene from the movie
