Interstellar may not have a universally beloved ending, but its production and sound design is hard to knock. From the boxy, utilitarian chic of the Bill Irwin voiced TARS robot, to the wonderfully stark exoplanet landscapes, it’s a design triumph. And as always, Hans Zimmer delivered on the score. One of the reasons the score is so singular is the unique instrument Zimmer brought in to help create the soundscape. The amazing and unique cristal baschet. Players use water to wet their fingers before touching the glass rods for turning the finger rubs and drags into enchanting echoes that sound as if they’re from another world. The cristal baschet can range up to six octaves and have 56 chromatically tuned glass rods.
