Making a 3D-Effect Layered Resin Painting

You’ve likely seen those amazing three-dimensional paintings of koi (and other) fish that are done by painting a layer, covering that with resin, painting another layer, more resin, etc. The result is an impressive 3D effect. But why always fish? Clearly, you could paint any subject-matter using this method, right?

That was the question that Martina of NerdForge wanted to answer. So, she painted a draft image of a fantasy scene and then set about converting it beneath layers of resin.

Martina found that each layer of resin took a long time to dry. Three-quarters of the way through, she switched to UV-curing resin. This allowed for super-fast drying. The next time she tries this, she’ll use all UV resin which will allow her to do many more layers (creating an even deeper 3D effect).
